Show The Army and Navy Club, at New York.have given a brilliant reception re-ception to Sir Lambton Lorraine, the commander of the British frigate the Xiobe. On that occasion there were assembled the most distinguish ed officers of both arms of the service and amoDg them the wealthiest gentlemen gen-tlemen of the United States. The list of names of those present shows how universal had been the admiration admira-tion of thia gallant sailor, and the "cordial welcome" that he received from them must have been intensely gratifying to Sir Lambton, ad an endorsement en-dorsement of that act of his life with which hia name will forever be associated as-sociated on the page of history. As Major General Hancock introduced him to tho club the U. 8. military band from Fort Hamilton struck up "Hail to the Chief and tho enthusiasm was unbounded. After a brief and fitly worded speech from General Hancock, Captain Lorraine thanked the club for the honors they had shown to him and delicately regarded th cm as paid to the British navy. To add to the gratification of the brilliant assemblage, letters were read from President Grant, Generals Sherman and Sncridan, the Secretary of War and Chief Justice Waite, regretting re-gretting that they could not be present; pres-ent; but they availed themselves of the occasion to send words of congratulation con-gratulation and greeting to the gallant gal-lant gentleman. . The honor thus shown tu Sir Lambton Lorraine by the Republic will cheer the heart of the brave Cubans, and no less forcibly speak to despotic Spain. |
