Show A Pleasure Drive. During the Summers of 1S72 and 'To, the question of throwing open ono of the streets in the city, for a carriage car-riage drivo was agitated by some of the owners of those vehicles, but no concerted public action in the matter was taken, and it fell through. Since that time tho need of such a drivo has been felt to a great extent. There should be at least one street in the city where carriage and buggy horses could be driven, and tho owners not subject themselves to prosecution for violating the ordinanco prohibiting prohib-iting fast driving ; a street in which the sees are covered so that teams will not have to bo reined up at every block to avoid accidents to the vehicles. Tho owners of fine turn-outs, livery men and others desire de-sire a place where they can show their outfits and see others. People riding for pleasure like company the society of others pursuing the same object is desirable. A movement is now on foot by many of the livery stable keepers and others to accomplish the above objects, ob-jects, and the enterprise is looked upon with such a degree of favor by the public generally that there is little doubt of its success. Fourth East street, south of Third South the eastern east-ern terminus of the street railroad line has been selected for the drive and a numerously signed petition was pre sented to the Council Tuesday even ing, asking that the above street be thrown open as a pleasure avenue. We understand that it is not proposed to ask the corporation for monetary aid to grade the street, tho projectors j of the enterprise offering- to expend their own private means for bridging the sees and putting tho drive in shape for pleasure-ridiDg. The location loca-tion is an excellent one, in a quiet, retired part of the city where" there is comparatively little travel, the street has ouly a slight down grade over the entire distance asked for, and can be put in proper shape at small cost; wo also understand the property owners thero are favorably disposed towards the granting of the petition, and some of them havo signified sig-nified their willingness to aid financially finan-cially the enterprise. Taking the desires de-sires and requirements of the citizens I interested, tho location and all into J consideration, we hope tho petition will be favorably considered and acted upon by the Council. |
