Show Only Ona. Under the heading of "But One Indictment," the S.in Francisco Call says: If tho SaIl Like Hi: ;ai.d tells a' straight story, there has us yet been but one indictment found by the United States Grand Jury of Utah under the anti-polygamy taw. The victim is George Reynolds, who was 1 held to bail in the sum of $-,-"00. It has been heretofore stated that indictments in-dictments were found against George Q. Cannon, tho man Ricks, and several sev-eral other Mormons for the offence of polygamy, and the Herald is therefore there-fore probably in error. It contends that the trial of -Reynolds will be made a test case, and be taken up finally to the Supreme Court of the United States, let it be decided as it may before be-fore the Utah courts. We can assure the Caft the Herald "tells a straight story" concerning the indictment under the anti-polygamy law. So far as is known .only one indictment for polygamy has been found, the statements about Mr. Cannon, Mr. Ricks, and several other Mormons lo the contrary notwithstanding. notwith-standing. A number of indictments have been found under the Territorial statute for punishing lewd and lasci-jvious lasci-jvious cohabitation; but Mr. Reynolds is the only person indicted for violating violat-ing the anti-polygamy law. The Hkrald is never in error, but -is always eminently correct. Our object ob-ject in publishing a paper is that the public may obtain straight stories and get at the truth. Quicn SuU.' |
