A most remarkable re-markable change inpolitical feeling occurred this evening. At noon the democrats conceded the state to the republicans by from 10,000 to 15,000, but this afternoon they received private pri-vate advices which considerably changed their figures, Bteadily cutting down Hayes' prospective majority. To night the democratic committee closed tho headquarters to outsiders, and have since been figuring on the result, and now claim that if Hayes is elected at all, he will not have over 2,500 majority. This result the committee com-mittee claim is reached from figures received from their private correspondents corres-pondents in fifty-three counties, wilh thirty-five counties to hear from. Thompson, democratic chairman, SAys they yet hope to prove Allen's election by a small majority. This news has spread like wildfire, and men who were confident to-day and jubilant over having won considerable sums of money on Hayes' election, now fill the republican committee rooms, anxiously inquiring for news. A.T. Wickotl, chairman of there- publican committee, admits that the news this afternoon will cut down Hayes' prospectivo majority, but claims no news at all in keeping with that at the democratic room. He declares he cannot see how it is possible to overcome Hayes' majority. major-ity. The republican figures giy: the republicans nine majority in the houie, not counting four considered doubtful, and six majority in the senate, wita four members in doubt yet. A revision of the republican figures gives Hayes a net gain of 8,431 in fifty-six counties. On the other hand the democratic figurers claim that Hayes will not have over 2,000 majority. |
