Show I By W. U. ToloEraph. STXIIKIXO COLLISION IN NEW YORK. New York, 9. The gas men and polioe came in conflict last evening and after a short, sharp tussle the policemen police-men were victorious. The strikers made a demonstration on the Manhattan Manhat-tan gas workB on the 10th avenue side, but were repulsed with little damage. A rallying rush was made for the 17th street entrance but the polico quickly making an appearance there, the strikers strik-ers were overawed and retreated to a safe distance, where they had a consul-. consul-. tation and, tho police say, obtained arms. Subsequently the wholo force of strikers was massed and a rush made, that the police might be taken by surprise and an entrance gained. The police were on the alert, however, and routed the gas men, many of whom had bloody heads. No pistols were used on either side. Tho attacks were made that the valve room might bo gained and tho gas shut off, so that citizens generally bo inconvenienced and made to sympathize with the strikers. During the conflict outside the works thero was tho greatest excitement. ex-citement. Inside the men wore armed, and expressed a determination to protect pro-tect themselves.- The strikers now number nearly 400. |
