Show li(y W. U. Tolograph.J KAILWAY BOND SWINDLE. New York, 24. A special from Newport, B. I., says: Tho following swindling operation came to light in this oity to night. About six months ago a man called upon O'iver Read, a wealthy broker of this city.and requested request-ed him to purchase $17,000 of Central Pacific railroad ten per cnt. income in-come bonds. Rend told him ho would not purchase, but he would sell them for him for one and a half per cent. The man conented. iRead immediately forwarded thorn to Fisk & Ilaiob, ol New York, for them to tell for him. In duo scason Read received a telegram from Fisk & Hatch, stating they had succeeded in disposing uf them, and had pluced the proceeds to his credit at a bank in that city. Thereupon Read informed his man who, by the way, had failed to state his name, that he had sold them and paid the man $14,51)0, after deducting his commi.-5ion and those of Fisk & Hatch. This morning Read received word from Fisk & Hatch, stating that the bonds were counterfeit. They also sent him $",0o0, requesting him to make good their loss. At noon he received re-ceived another letter from them with 10,000 more bogus bonds. This fraud was detected at the office of the railroad rail-road company in New l'ork, when the coupons were presented for payment. It is reported on good authority that tho swindler was in New York yester day. Doubtless he will soon bo in the hinds of justice. |
