Show l'Riu runts are making on Senator Sen-ator Carpenter, of Wisconsin. Gen. Cobb, ex-Congressman from that State, is given as authority for a related re-lated affair in Beloit, years ago, in which the Senator courted a worthy young lady, deserted her, and mar-rial mar-rial another, and then attempted to lure the first one into an intrigue. The exploit ended with a cowhide accompaniment. A correspondent of the Cincinnati Enuirtr writes: "I have been the rounds of the springs and beaches, and find that the man most talked about this year is His Honor Matt Carpenter. 1 "Women get together in corners and tell the tale again, and politicians remark that Matt has cut his weazen very suddenly and wilfully." It is just about seven years since this man began to ascend. He has since gone up in true rocket style and now comes down like a scorched, begrimmcd, and smudged stick. Is this a sign that the country is to attempt a season sea-son of special moral purification as well as general political reformation.' |
