Show CHICAGO AXD SILVER-MI.- ix;. A letter in the Tunis of xU Monday Mon-day gave some facts of interest -in re-' gnnl to the Goose Creek mining region of Nevada, and which is ..mainly owneil and controlled by Chicago capital.- This region is the-only one of considerable value discovered north of, and adjacent to,' the Pacific railway, rail-way, and in which silver has Wen found in paying quantities. The region re-gion itself is of extraordinary richness, rich-ness, nnd the developments; though embracing but a ven- limited' period, and including but a -very small. force. of men, have reached extraordinary dimensions. Some of the assays of ore taken out run as high as $1,500 per ton, although this is, of course, an extreme ease. The average value of the ore is probably from 100 to $200 per ton. - - -, . - - r The opening of this region .enunot but prove of great value as an auxiliary auxili-ary mdustry of Chicago. The mini's already located are some forty in number, many of whom are of great value, while others arc yet unopened, and may prove of greater or less value than those already being operated. oper-ated. The companies owning and working these mine have done a wise thing in their organization, which is to prohibit the peddling of their stock. None of it can bo put on the market for stork-jobbing purposes, so that the efforts of all must bo confined to the actual development of the mines. Were all mining operations organized on this basis, there would he vastly more mineral taken out than there now is. and infinitely less ruinous speculation in mining stocks. Chicago has now very large interests in silver-mining: and the smelting works in operation here form a very considerable addition to our industries. indus-tries. There is no reason,. however, ; why there should not be ten times as much capital invested in legitimate mining ;w there now is. The results are as sure as in almost any other branch of eilort. and tlie profits arc vastly greater. Chicago is admirably situated with reference to the mines of Colorado and Nevada, but more especially so with reference to those of the latter. - There is a direct railway rail-way connection wth the vast mining region of Nevada: and there is no other city so well situated in this respect re-spect as the Garden city. Our capitalists capi-talists "should inform tlitfiifteivcs of the incalculable value of these re-gions,and re-gions,and should make their development develop-ment a conspicuous branch o(Chieago enterprise.- The acquisition of tlie large territory embraced in the GoOriC Creek region is a step in the right direction, and it should lie followed liy u down other Cfjnrvllre-tenilen efforts Ciiieago hae the location-, the capital, to control a great share of the Nevada. L'tah, nnd New Mexico mini's; and if this be dune promptly and thoroughly, there is no limit to the pecuniar- W iu liu which will surely follow sued nctiort. Chicago Tint. |
