Show BOSH HASUO.VA' Yesterday evening the Jwi-h New Year, or "Rosh Hahona," the chief day, the first of the ten penitential days, the day of Bounding the Shop-har, Shop-har, to be observed with solemnity by the descend eats of Israel in all the world, commenced, and will continue until to-morrow evening at tun-dowa. tun-dowa. The reason why it is extended extend-ed over two days is because of the doubts that might exist in different dif-ferent parts of the world as to the hour when the day should begin, owing to the difference of longitude. Services will bo held by the Israelites of this city three times a day, during to-day and to-morrow, in the "Liberal Institute," Insti-tute," secured for the occasion. This is one of the principal solemn days of a people and a faith that run away back into the mists of the past, to a timo when their civiliration shone brightly while the ! ancestry of nations now boastful of their greatness, refinement and glory, were rude savages, in little eu perior to the nomads that wander through the Rocky Mountains. " Amid thousands of changes, and a strangely eventiul history, the Israelites, as each new year returns, look back over the long roll of their genealogy, and are called to remembrance of tho Power which preserved to their race and faith an unquestioned identity through long centuries, while nations that have enslaved or persecuted them have sunk from earth, leaving scarcely the monumental ruins of their former greatness. The preservation of the distinctive nationality and faith of the Jewish race is a lesson which modern sceptics might study with profit. |
