His highest ambition is to be placed in tho responsible position of ''lookout" or "capper" for a faro game, for the whisky he can guzzle and for the '';lcepcr3"he can steal dur-:uc dur-:uc the evening. His cailing is varied, iVoiu a "pigcon-stoul" to a gambling-shop, gambling-shop, to "roping in" an unsuspecting countryman, or "rolling" a drunken soldier. He is a sneak thief and gar-roter, gar-roter, as opportunity favors, and, in short, the most sneaking and villainous villain-ous reptile of all villains. There are a fe.v deus iu this city around which these foul birds of evil omen are daily and niahtly seen hanging. During the day they collect in front of some store or shop, and make insulting remarks about ladies as they pass along tho street; and at night ply their infamous trado. As we stated there are gambling hells, or rather "garro-ters' "garro-ters' den',"' in this city, which harbor this class of scoundrels. They ore known and watched, and we are much mistaken if justice, in broken doses, docs not be meted out to some of them before Ions, and the sooner the better. |
