Show The Wolf Explosion. Memphis, 24. From the ollicers of the steamer now on the steam er Julia, it is learned that Captain Carter, who was s-'o badly burned, is hkely to recover. He was rescued by a colored chambermaid, Lizzie Thompson, who also rescued and saved the lives of three other officers. Donohoe, Eddy and Windham, Stewart JlcCaflery, engaged in endeavoring en-deavoring to save others, was drowned. As near as can be ascertained there were seven whites and eight colored persons lost. The second engineer, Wm. Defoe, whose carelessnc and neglect ushered so many souls into eternity, was seen to try the guage and then run to the side of the boat and jump into the river. He was last seen swimming towards shore, before the accident, and escaped to the woods. Up to the time of tho disaster he was considered a careful man. |
