Show IMPROVED STOCK AND STOCK HAISINO- Whilo in Lopan, tho capital of C'aoho county, a few days ago, our attention at-tention was directed to a ftuall herd of half breed t'otswold Iambs, numbcriDp forty-four, tho properly of Messrs. T. Kicks and G. L. Farrell of that city. Tho youngest was two months and the oldest five months old, and the weight of tho oldest averaged a hundred and twenty pounds. They were part of tho product of four pure Cotswold ratus imported by the owners of tho co operative op-erative sheep herd of that county. Subsequently a pure Durham bull, the property of mayor Preston, and Mr. Turbitt, of Loean was pointed out to us; and still later another pure Durham Dur-ham bull belonging to Mr. Farrell; and a pure bred Couwold ram .with one of the Leicester breed, in connection with a portion of tho co-opcrativo cheep herd which contained many half-breed lambs. We also learned that in the same valley Mr. S. Holt has charge of a one-year one-year old Darham bull belonging to President B. Young. The product of the rama and bulls iff already seen in improved stock, of which Cache county has reason to bo proud; but a few years will show results gratifying not only to tho county but of benefit to the T.'rr.tnrv. Cache county, Rich county and Box FAder county have a mine of wealth in their ranges, which may bo and should bo utilized in the keeping of hundreds of head of stock for every one now sub eistiDg and fattening on them. One cannot drive over the long miles of land, at present incapable of cultivation cultiva-tion because there is not water to irri gate it, yet bearing an abundance of succulent grasses, without being struck by the fact that stock-raising should playas important a part in theeconomj of that portion of the Territory as agri culture. There is range enough it that portioD of Utah alono to feed cattle 6nfficient to supply the en-tiro en-tiro demand of the Territory ; and yet we are importing cattU j by the thousand, and in tho winter- i time slaughtered becres by the scon. ! of car-loads. It seenu that a cattle association, or. the cooperative plan, organized in thai part of the Territory would result it ultimate fortunes to thoso who would embark in the enterprise, and woulo greatly aid in making Utah what h should bo a great stock-raising country. coun-try. True, for five or fix years the people of Cache and Kiuh countie:-have countie:-have been greatly impoverished bj grasshopper ravages, and this year the lending men of the former county are bending their energies to tho building of tho Utah Northern railroad ; yet such an association, we think, might be formed, cattlo purchased, and the capital capi-tal thus invested would grow on the principle of geometrical progression if tho calves were saved. To estimate the extent of range in the three counties named that might be thus utilized, and that is now comparatively valueless there not being stock to eat the feed, would be almost impossible. For miles on miles in every direction the richest bunch grass grows in profusion; and where within reasonable hauling distance of cities and settlements it is cut in abundance abund-ance for hay, yet leaving sufficient for grazing purposes when thus dealt with; whilo in places further removed from the settlements it grows up in its luxuriance, lux-uriance, withers unutilized, and meets the change incident to all vegetation untrodden by the foot of man or beast, and of no practical value as matters are, where it might bo the source of vast wealth to individuals and to the community. Tbese euggestions will be applicable to other places besides Cache Valley, but our thoughts were directed towards that region because of recent personal observations. And we would urge their importance upon stock growers all through the Territory, that means may be adopted not only to improve tho breeds of stock, but to end the disgrace which Utah labors under in importing cattle, beef and mutton while possessing ranges sufficient to enable her to meet the demand of almost al-most the entire western market. |
