Show Lively Alarms, and Light Fires. At aUut half past seven o'clock, yesterday, morning, passers-by noticed no-ticed smoke issuing from thereof of the building occupied by Batavia &. Horn, as a barber shop and hair-dressing hair-dressing establishment, on Second South street, near East Temple. A messenger was hurried to the City Hall, and at once a lively alarm was sounding, calling forth in less than ten minutes the fire department with steam rapidly rising. But upon their arrival at the scene of action, it was evident that there was more alarm than fire, and a little application of water prevented further difficulty. A large quantity of soot had accumulated accumu-lated in the stove pipe from the soft coal burned all winter, and this had ignited. There was a grand smoke, and but for the promptness of the firemen there might have been a live ly com I motion m a short time. iho "Fat Boy," who manages the barber shop, thinks there was too much water for a lire and yet scarcely enough for a bath. Being sprinkled in Kxl is more novel than pleasant. At alnrnt ten o'clock another alarm was sounded, and again the engines were rushed out, and again the fire was extinguished with little trouble. This time the ditriculty occurred in the small brick building at the back of Walker Bros.' store, where their machine for manufacturing gas from gasoline is in operation. The gas in the receiver, which is alout the size of a barrel, took fire, causing an explosion, ex-plosion, but doing no great damage. This fire was extinguished by means of the pumps on the premises, together togeth-er with a Babeock extinguisher. The promptness of the fire department depart-ment was handsomely rewarded by the Messrs. Walkers with n, check of $100, which was duly appreciated by the hrigade. |
