Show THE LITEST SENSATION, (rami Row In (amp. FEDERAL OKKiCIALS, UUAKU JURORS, F.T. A L.. OX THE AVAIL PATH. 3CALPd WASTED. a are always averse to dragging family matters before the public; they are, or should bo, private; but when they appear in tho shape of arrests and bonds given for trial they can no : louger be' kept in the background. I Testerday there was excitement around those palatial places where cocktails ; arc dispensed, and "slings" are slung into devoted bibulants. There were muttered execrations on the side-walk and breathings dire in divers places. For had not a federal official accused an as-grand juror and a present grand juror, with others including a couple of ladie.-i, of a serious ofTence; and did not the parties charged 03 uforesaid also charge the before referred-to federal official of certain conduct not becoming a wise man and not in accordance ac-cordance with "the statutes of William Wil-liam and Mary." First it was whispered whis-pered in sccrcoy, aa a thing of which the public should know nothing; then it leaked out that judicial aid was invoked; and finally the gentlemanly deputy marshal whi made himself so familiar with our saered editorial persons per-sons over a year ago, was seen hurrying hurry-ing with hot haste, up and down, and it becamo known that arrests were mado and bonds were being prepared. Our energetic reporters wcro here, there and everywhere; climbiug uncertain un-certain stairs, entering all kinds of offices, asking all manner of proper questions, and receiving most oleagin-ously oleagin-ously smooth replies; until one of them bore back in triump tho following COMPLAINT, By Silas B. Overton, charging James F. Woodman, Enos A. Wall, John W. Morchous, Esther Morehous, his wife, and Harriet A. Lewis, with maliciously abducting, taking inducing, leading, decoying away Alice Overton, a minor ! child, unmarried, from her father, the said Silas B. Overton, who is tho natural nat-ural guardian of said Alice, with intent in-tent to detain, conceal and secrete tho said minor child from her said father; and that she is now secreted and detained de-tained from her Baid father, by the said James F. Woodman, Enos A. Wall, JohnW. Morehous, &o. Hero was a pretty kettle of fish! 1 Major Overton is receivor of the land office in this city; Mr. Woodman bears I tho honors of an es-grand juror; Mr, ; Morehous is ono of the present standing stand-ing grand inquest; and Col. Wall is non est over tho U. P. K. R. and away in New York. Miss Overton is gone that's fact number one; why she's gone and where she's gone aro other matters, concerning which there are ! divers stories which we will not re-produce, re-produce, for they might do gross in justice to one or other of tho parties I on both sides. But this much is said , by those charged with the abduetion ; that MUs Overton, who is sixteen years of age, was ill-treated by her parents, and that in consequenco they uided her to leave home that she might be under other protection than theirs. , Other motives for the disappearance aro attributed to thoso who assisted the young lady in her flight. Tho facts of her going, as near as we could gather, are these. About six weeks ago, on a Sunday night, she left , her father's houso, and remained in 1 the ciiy, it is said liaving gone into j another family as lured help. Sub- I ; tequently Col. Wall going east she was taken in a buggy, by Mr. Morehous More-hous it is alleged, to Echo, and there put on the U. P. R. R. cars under the protection of Cob Wall, who was to see here safely east. Shortly after missing her, Major Overton, went to Omaha, as wo aro informed, to overtake over-take and bring her back, thinking she bad gono cast, but she was still in this city and remained bore until after his return. Sho is now, it is gaid, at school in Washington, D. O, but of this we know nothing. Yes terete? Mr. Woodman and Ir. Morchou3 were nrrcstcd and, waiving an examination, gave bonds to appear for trial in $.r),000 each. Mrs. More-lmm More-lmm and Mrs. Lewis were also arrested, ar-rested, and gavo bonds in $2,000 each, also waiving an examination. And so tho case stands. And of the future developments will they not ho duly chronicled in tho Herald? |
