A correspondent, correspond-ent, writing from Qraniteviile, says he has twice called on the "sheriff" of that precinct to make affidavit, iu one case traveling thirty-two miles to do so, and neither time found that functionary func-tionary at home; whereat he is wrothy. Our correspondent must bc in error. Precincts have justices but not sheriffs, and it is probably a justice of the peace- he meant. Besides, sheriffs are not allowed in Utah, under tho more recent re-cent interpretation of the law. They may hold office, but tho office U like a muslin collar to an Arctic traveler, more for ornament than use. Deputy marshals arc all that is required in those latter times, and county officers arc practically abolished. |
