Relieving tirmly, as w.t d. i, that tie-prosperity tie-prosperity and true weliiiie of any cm-1 munily increase in proportion as edu- cation and true morality increase ! among the people, we have been naturally natu-rally led lo consider what are the best I means lo promoto thesa two preat ob-, jeets in our community. Tho same; system of education which' prevails in Utah has been tried and abandoned, asj a miserable tiiilure, in all the New. Knglandj Middle and Western .States; of this I nion. Many of tho Southern !Staten, if uot all, havo recently placed I tho al of reprobation upon it, and are now earnestly trying to introdueu a Koncral system in its slcad. When: the suceoas and value of iho school are : j let t to dopend upon the pleasure of the directors, tho whim of the teacher, I . or the caprice of the parent, tho great benefit that ought to result from the I school is, necessarily, imperiled or to - j tally destroyed. j The many odueational meetings that havo boon held in Utah during the j past year, clearly indicate that the poo-ple poo-ple are fully aroused to tho importance of this subject. They seem anxious to ! try a system which is bearing such rich ! fruits in the States. Many persons are, and always will , be, opposed to genend taxation for any benevolent object. Hut as tho good arising from a general diffusion of a knowledgo among the masses o! the people, is participated in by all all should ho required to contribute to its support. As a general system of free schools always requires time to perfect its details, and to overcome the prejudices of opponent, we cannot can-not (oo earnestly press upon your notice no-tice the importance of a legislative enactment en-actment on this subject at your present, session. If, in the judgment of your honorable bodies, (he time lias arrived when n general system of free schools, (supported by taxation, can be safely and successfully introduced into this Territory, ttVn your petitioners humbly hum-bly suggest the propriety and importance impor-tance of present legislative action in that direction, and, as in duly bound, will ever pray, tVe.
