Show Judge Lewis. The Idaho papers arc discussing the merits and demerits of tho late associate justice of Idaho, lion. J. It. Lewis, who has lately been appointed associate justice of Washington Wash-ington Territory, in ao evidently unpleasant un-pleasant mood. The Statesman a Republican paper of which party judge Lewis is a very ardent member, says of him oq the eve of his departure depart-ure to bis new tiold of operation: "We consider him a dangerous man on the bench, and the sorry est appointment appoint-ment ever mado in our Territory, and tear he will be no better in his new iield. He ha-s never identified himself with our people, except for rule or ruin, and has never invested in any property, prop-erty, only to keep body and soul together. toge-ther. In the truo sense of the word, he was a genuine "carpet-bagger," and a bad one for any community. He never merited friendship, and has gone unregietted and unhonorcd." The World commends the ijtates-wait's ijtates-wait's independence ia giving expression expres-sion to its honest convictions in the face of party fealty, aod asserts that it knew all about Lewis' crooked ways long ago, and is now only pleased that his party friends are willing to admit the correctness of its views and estim-his estim-his worth accordingly. The Avalanche comes to the res-" cue of Lewis and brands the attacks upon his public and private priv-ate character as inlamous and unbecoming un-becoming in the extreme, and says "he was one of the ablest, most honorable, hon-orable, upright and incorruptible j judges that ever occupied the bench of Idaho Territory." ljwis may be all that is claimed for him by both sides, but there is one thing certain, cer-tain, that the policy that he attempted to pursue on the Idaho bench was arbitrary, if not arrogant, ar-rogant, and wo do not wonder that he came to grief. The Kngelbrceht deei-j-ion by the Supreme Court of the L'uited States settles a number of hi.-, rulings which were s-iuiilar to those rendered last summer in this Territory. |
