Show I j GRACE GREENWOOD ON THE j MORMONS. In the oid Tabernacle, wc yesterday attended a mass meeting, cailed by the j mayor, to raise money tor tho relief of the Chieapo sufferer?. Here we saw Rrigham Young, and I must confess ta a great surprise. I had heard many descriptions of his personal appearance, appear-ance, but I could not recognize tbo picture so often and elaborately painted. paint-ed. I did not see a common, gross-looking gross-looking person, with rude mntiDers, and a sinister, sensual countenance, j hut a woll-dre?scd, dignified old gentleman, gentle-man, with a pole, mild face, a clear gray eye, a pleasant smile, a courteous address, and withal a patriarchal, paternal pa-ternal air, which, of course, ho comes rightly by. In short, I could sco in his face or manner nono of the profligate propensities, and iho dare crimes charged against this mysterious, masterly, mas-terly, many sided and many-wived man. Tho majority of the citizens of Salt Lako present on this occasion were Mormons, some of them tho very polygamisls poly-gamisls arraigned for trial, and it was a etrango thing to sec theso men, standing stand-ing at bay, with' "tho pcoplo of tho United States" against them, giving generously to their enemies. It either shows that they have underlying their fanatical faith, and their Mohammedan practices, a better religion of humanity, or that thoy understand tho wisdom of a return of good for evil just at this time. It is either rare christian charity or masterly worldly policy. Or, perhaps, it is nbout half-and-half. Human nature is a good deal mixed out hero. But I do not suppose it will matter to tho people of dcor, desolate Chicago what tho motive was that prompted tho generous offerings from this fair city among tho mountains. Tho hands stretched out in help, whether poly- f;amio or monoganiic, aro to them the lands of friends and brothers. Certain Cer-tain it is that tho "Saints" seemed to givo gladly and promptly according to tboir means. President Young gave fivo hundred each as quietly as the poor brethren and sifters their modest tribute of fractional currency. It is thought that Utah will raise at least $20,000. There is to n;o, I must acknowledge, in this prompt aud liberal action of the Mormon people, something strange and touching. It is llagar ministering to Sarah; it h lshmael giving a brotherly lift to Isaac. G. G. in N. V. Times, Oct. 2-1. |
