This is because he feared the ringitcs would turn State's evidence against him. Connolly's friends say that he only went out of the cily to avoid the fleecers who want to get his money. Mrs. Connolly is in Savannah. It was rumored yesterday that one of Tweed's bondsmen intended to surrender sur-render him. Garvey's appearance as a witness in the Hall case, created a , urofbund sensation and brought con sternation to Hall and his counsel. Garvey's return is due to the negotiations negotia-tions of his wife several weeks ago, with the attorney general and Samuel J. Tilden, by which Garvey was promised prom-ised immunity from prosecution on his turning State's evidence, and returning some ill-gotten money. He has been in concealment at his residence'about a month. It is alleged that Iogersoll has also turned informer. Few, knew Garvey to be a witness until his name was called. Hall's counsel don't think their case will be much a&eoted by Garvey's testimony, still there is a general gen-eral trepidation among the entire lam-many lam-many ring over the proceedings of yes-, terday, and every effort will be made by the friends of the ring to have Garvey Gar-vey arrested on a new order, the old one having expired by limitation. His turning State's evidence endangers the saiety of Tweed, Connolly, Sweeney and die rest, and jt js believed they will all flee the city. |
