I ... Parties contemplating the purchase pur-chase of Sewing Machine are requeued re-queued to read the following from the Sew York 'Tribune" of Oct. HAVING MACIIIMIS. We have recently had occasion to make ioine iinjuirieo into the progress of improvement improve-ment io the mechanism of sewing machines, and were not a little surprised to learn that the central idea in the tini invention tae shuttle still holds na plae, thougn many aueuiu have been made to supercede it. The inutile, io Cuinoiuation with the needle, is 8 in I the u:euns used to iV-rm the stitcu, in the leading machines, and we find that the uruwtb of trade is chietly with thesbuttle-utiiiK thesbuttle-utiiiK machines. Ine improvements that are taking firm hold in practical use are, therefore, necessarily necessa-rily in connection with the shuttle, either in the detail of the shuttle itself, or ! in other parts of the machine connected with u, to caue tne whole to operate more ; perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its ue. Many important gains in this direction, made since the hrst great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embod.ed in the "t'lorencu" ma-chule; ma-chule; and we recommend our readers to carefully inspect the "Florence" before making ma-king a choice, 'ine points peculiar to this machine are: An unusual amount of money is spent in making the "1 lore nee," thereby securing the best material (.steel, for instance, where others use cat-iron ), and the i.nest tiu.sh of important r;irts vthe shuttle, fur example, being rigidly rejected if it varies from the standard l-2,iA'Jth of an inch !) It is con-atructed con-atructed on the simplest scientific principles, entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, 1 and links wnich so often get perversely out of order and sorely perplex every one but the practiced machinist by their unaccountable unaccount-able freaks. Ihe ".Florence" is so easily managed, and its use is so readily learned, that an ordinary girl of ten has sense and muscle enough to run it perfectly. 'Xne lockstitch, lock-stitch, as made by the "Florence" is very regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, and is drawn into the labrio evenly, gradually, grad-ually, exactly, without jerking, and without causing the seain to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger its breaking; consequently, con-sequently, veiy hne threads and light fabrics can be ued. Besides this, the ' Fierence" (in all but the cheapest styles) also makes three additional stitcues a double lock, a single knot and a double knot which are stronger and more elastic than any other stitch, and which are made by no other machine. ma-chine. Ihe "Florence" i the only machine that his a reversioie ieed, whereby the di-' di-' rection of the sewing can be instantly changed without stopping the work, thus enabling the operator to quilt or embroider with unusual laciliiy, to sew backwards and easily strengthen a seam wherever desired, and, finally, by a few repeated stitches, to fasten ends in the quickest and strongest way. It is the only machine that has n self-adjusting self-adjusting shuttle-thread tension, which works so perfectly that the operator can run across the heaviest seams and sew the finest linen and the thickest broadcloth in immediate imme-diate succession without breaking the thread and without changing the needle, stitch or tension, iue "Florence" draws the thread into the cloth with unequaled precision and certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic "take-up" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left after the stitch with an accurate promptness that prevents aid snarling snarl-ing or dropping of stitches, and allows the orerator to sew backward, or to run off the clotn and on again, with perfect impunity. It has an improved elastic hemmer, exclusively exclu-sively its own, which is managed with ease, and will make a hem of any width on any material. It not only makes a perfect gather and sews it to a band at one operation, but it hems, and binds, and fells, and quilts, and com, and tucKs, and gathers, and braid without batin. iuch special provision U made agamst injurious wear that the "Flor ence"' to claimed and guaranteed by the Company Com-pany to last twice as long without repair as any other shuttle machine in the market, without the slu-iuest dimculty. livery part of the "ftoreuce"" is so perfectly and permanently perma-nently adjusted, and it has so few joints and points of friction, that it runs with the utmost ut-most ejd. ice needle is set and threaded, and the stiuh ii lengihened, shortened, or reversed with the utmost ut-most ease. It hid lately been rev UeJ by the author, and materiilly improved by the addition of much important matter, giving all the lute laws and published decisions down to This bovk has, up to thepresent lime, reached reach-ed a larger sale than any other work of the kind in this country. This fact may be mentioned men-tioned as evidence of its superior merit, lis excellence consists both in the matter embraced, em-braced, and the arrangement or clarification clarifica-tion of subjects. In the collection of matter containtd in the work it is intended to give all tlie statute law and the general principles of the common com-mon law in connection therewith, which a justice of the peace, police magistrate, con-stableor con-stableor coroner will require in discharging their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference in ordinary cases, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This will entirely supersede the necessity for reference to the volumes ol the statutes. The arrangement of the work is methodical, methodi-cal, and cf the essence of its value, presenting present-ing each subject in its order aud in its proper relation with others. The plan of the arrangement is entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of genoral remark that tho author has, in this work, presented the law with a clearness and simplicity of style which renders ren-ders the whole ali.e plain to the common understanding as to the more advanced lawyer. law-yer. The justice of the peace, police magistrate, constablo, nnd coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instructions instruc-tions in regard to every branch of his duty. The practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arranged in convenient form, all the statute law and decisions, with reference to adjudicated esses applicable in ordinary practice. The business man will find in it a complete collection of forms required in the transaction transac-tion of business. Students of the law will likewise find this a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general principles of the common law, clearly stated, in connection connec-tion with the ordinary branches of jurisprudence. jurispru-dence. The following brief reference to the contents con-tents ol this work will afford iu some.degree an idea of its peculiar merits. The book is divided in five parts, the subject of each being be-ing methodically arranged in chapters or appropriate ap-propriate subdivisions, as follows : Part 1.
