The shuttle, in combination with the needle, is still the means used to form the stitch, in the leading machines, and wo find that the growth of trade ia chiefly with the shuttle using machines. The improvements that are taking firm hold in practical use are, therefore. necc--;t-t rily in connection with the shuttle, either in the detail of the tuutilo its. If, or in other parts of the machine- connected with it. to cause ttio whole to opera.e mort perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify it.-use. it.-use. Many important gains in this direction, made since the fir.n jrreat invention, aro undoubtedly un-doubtedly embodied in the "t lurtncj" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to carefully inspect the "i lorenco" before ma-kmc ma-kmc a choice. The points peculiar to this nia jhine are : An unusual amount ol money is spent iD maning the "Florence," thereby securing j the best material (steel, for instance, when others use cast-iron ), and the i nest limsh o! ! important parts (the shuttle, for example, 1 being rigidly rejected if it varies from the standard l-2.0vjth of an inch I) It is con-I con-I Btruoted on the simplest scientitic principles, 1 entirely dispensing with the coys, and cams. ; and links wnich so often get perversely out j of order and sorely perplex every one but I the practiced machinist by their unaccount-: unaccount-: able- freaks. The "Florence" is eo er.silj I managed, and its use is so readily learned, ! that an ordinary girl of ten h:is sense and 1 muscle enough to run it perfectly. Tnelock-stitch, Tnelock-stitch, as made by the "Florence" is ver regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, and is drawn into the fabric evenly, gradually, grad-ually, exactly, without jerking, and without I causing the seam to pucker, or Etraining the j thread so as to endanger its breaking ; consequently, con-sequently, vei y fine threads and lignt i abricf can be used. Besides this, the 'Florence" 1 (in all but the cheapest styles) also maket j three additional stitches a double lock, a I single knot and a double knot which are t stronger and more elastic than any other i stitch, and which are made by no other ma-I ma-I chine. The "Florence" is the only machine ! that his a reversiole eed, whereby the direction di-rection of the sewing can be instantly ! changed without stopping the work, thus j enabling the operator to quilt or embroider with unusual facility, to sew backwards and i easily strengthen a Eeam wherever desired, and, finally, by a few repeated stitcnes, to ! fasten ends in the quickest and strongest way. It is the only machine that has a sell-adjusting sell-adjusting shuttle-thread tension, which J works so perfectly that the operator can run , across the heaviest seams and sew the finest linen and the thickest broadcloth in imme-j imme-j diate succession withont breaking the thread and without changing the needle, stitch or : tension. The "Florence" draws the thread i into the cloth with unequalei precision and I certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic "take-up" wheal, vrhich disposes of 1 the slack thread left after the stitch with an ! accurate promptness that prevents a 1 enarl- mg or dropping of stitches, and allows tne ; operator to Eew backward, or to run off the ; cloth and on aain, with perfect impunity, i It has an improved elastic hemmer, exclusively exclu-sively its own, which is managed with ease. and will make a hem cf any wid:h on any material. ' It not only niakeo a perfect gather j and sews it to a band at cne operation, but : it hems, and binds, and fell?, and quilts, ana cords, and tucks, and gather.-, and braid -without basting. Suoh special provLr.n it made aga.nst injurious wear that the "Florence" "Flor-ence" is claimed and guaran:ecu by the Company Com-pany to last twice as long without repair as , any other shuttle machine in the market, without the slightest dinieulty. very part : of the "Florence" is so perfectly and permanently perma-nently adjusted, and it has so few joints and pomta ot friction, that it rua with the utmost ut-most eae. Tne neeiie is stt and threaded, and the stitch is lengthened snortened or reversed with tne upmost up-most ease.
