Show THK MIDWIFERY Ql'KSTIOX. SaltLakk Crri", Jan. 1st, 1871. Editors Btiuhl: I wish some one who is practically competent would favor your readers with an article on midwifery as it is practiced in this Territory. To me it is known, and I have no doubt it is to you and to many others, that there are many who undertake to perform the duties of midwives who are unfit and unqualified; unquali-fied; and the result is a greater mortality mortal-ity among women and children in child-bed than is necessary. Now, if the lives of our wives and unborn offspring off-spring are endangered, as they certainly certain-ly are, by incompetent practitioners, should not sometliiug be done at once to bring about a change ? Some measure meas-ure should be adopted by the Legislature Legisla-ture to have women qualified to practice prac-tice as midwives; aud all who could not prove, to an appointed committee, that they are qualified should not be allowed to practice, except in certain extreme cases of necessity. This could not be brought about at once, nor without considerable trouble; but if all, or a small number of those concerned, would use their influence, there would soon be an important change. If a school of some kind was established, as was proposed by your correspondent "B.," and every Relief Society would have one or more of its members (a.-encumstances (a.-encumstances required), attend said school, until they were qualified in every sense of the word for the duties of midwives, it would be a blessing to the community. |
