Part lea contemplating the purchase pur-chase of Sewing Machines are requeued re-queued to read the following from the New York "Tribune" of Oct. lOtb, 1870i SEWING MACIIIXKS. We have recently had occasion to make some inquiries into the progress of improvement improve-ment in the mechanism of sewing machines, and were not a little surprised to learn that the central idea in the first invention tae shuttle still holds its place, though many attempts have been made to supercede it. The ahuttle, in combination with the needle, 1 is still the il eans used to form the stitch , in ' the leading machines, and we find that the gruwth of trade is chietiy with theshuttle-uiiiiK theshuttle-uiiiiK machines. Ihe improvements that are taking firm hold in practical use are, therefore, necessarily necessa-rily in connection with the shuttle, either in the detail of the shuttle itself, or in other parts of the machine connected with it, to cause tne whole to operate more perfectly and uniformly, and to simplily iu use. Mmy important gains in this direction, made since the first great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embodied in the "Florenco" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to eareiully inspect the "-Florence" before making ma-king a choice. ihe points peculiar to this machine are: i An unusual amount of money is spent in maKing the "r'lorenee," thereby securing the best material isteel, lor instance, where others use cast-irun ), and the i.nest tiu sh of , important parts (the shuttle, for example, being rigidly rejected if it varies from the' standard 1-iOuJth of an inch 1) It is con- atructea on the simplest scientific principles, : entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, . aud links wnich to often get perversely out ! ot order and uorely perplex every one but the practiced machinist by their unaccount- able freaks. Ihe "t'lorence" is so easily managed, and it use is so readily learned, that an urduiary girl of ten has sense and muscle enough tu run it perfectly, iae lockstitch, lock-stitch, as maae by tne ".Florence" is very ; regular ana perfect, very strong and elastic, : and is drawn into the tabric evenly, grad- ; uall., exactly, without jerking, and without causing the seam to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger its breaking; con-jequently, con-jequently, veiy fine threads and light labnes oan be used. Besides this, the ' i'lerence" Un all but the cheapest styles) also makes, three additional stitches a double lock, a ' single knot and a double knot which are stronger and more elastic than any other stitch, and which are made by no other ma- : chine. Ihe "i iorence" is the only machine that his a reversiole eed, whereby the direction di-rection of the sewing can be instantly ' changed without stopping the work, thus enabung the operator to quilt er embroider ; with unusual taciiity, to sew backwards and easily strengthen a seam wherever desired, i and, finally, by a few repeated sutches, to 1 fasten eoos in the quickest and strongest way. It is the only machine that has a self- : adjusting shuttle-thread tension, which i worts so per tetly that the operator can run ' across the eaviest seams and sew the finest : linen and the thickest broadcloth in imme diate succession witnont breaking thethread and witnout chancing- the needle, stitch or tension Ihe ".Florence" draws the thread into tne cloth with unequaled precision and certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic "ike-up" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left after the stitch with an 1 accurate promptness that prevents ail snari-iag snari-iag er dropping of stitches, and allows the operLor to sew backward, or to run on" the cloth and on acam, with perfect impunity. It has an improved e iae do hemmer, exclusively exclu-sively its own, which is managed with ease, and wui make a hem of any width on any material it not only makes a perfect gather and sews it to a bind at one operation, but it hems, and binds, and fells, and quilts, and coras, and tucss, and gathers, and braioa without oastini. L & book well known to every justice cf the j ye ace, practicing lawyer aud public oilicer m Illinois iud the Northwestern States and Territories, as the most useful and complete work of the kind extant. j It has lately been revised by the author,, and materially improved by tho addition of much important matter, giving all the late laws and published decisions down to li-f li-f his book has, up to the present time, reached reach-ed a larger sale than any other work of the kind iu this country. This fact may be men- tioned as evidence of its superior merit. Its excellence consists both in the matter em- : braced, and the arrangement or classification classifica-tion of subjects. In the collection of matter contained in the wo.k it is intended to give all the statute Law and the general principles of tho common com-mon law in connection therewith, which a justice of the peace, polic ) magistrate, con-stableor con-stableor coroner will reo.uire in dischargi ng their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference in ordinary eases, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This will entirely supersede the necessity for reference to the volumes ol the statutes. 'Ihe arrangement of the work is methodical, methodi-cal, and cf the essence of its value, presenting present-ing each subject in its order and in its proper relation with others. The plan of the arrangement is entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of general remark that the author has, in this work, presented the law with a clearness and simplicity of style which renders ren-ders the whole alirf e plain to the common understanding as to the more advanced lawyer. law-yer. The justice of the peace, police magistrate, constable, and coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instruo tions in regard to every branch of his duty. Tho practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arranged in convenient form, all the statuto law and decisions, with reference to adjudicated oises applicable in ordinary practice. The businessman will find in it a complete collection of forms required in the transaction transac-tion of business. Students of the law will likewise find this a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general principles of the common law, cleaily stated, in connection connec-tion with the ordinary branches of juris prudence. pru-dence. The following brief reference , to the con- j tents of this work will afford iu some.degree , an idea of its peculiar merits. The book is divided in five parts, the subject of each being be-ing methodically arranged in chapters or appropriate ap-propriate subdivisions, as follows : Part 1. Of Justices of the Peace, election and qualification, and proceedings proceed-ings before them in civil cases. Comprised in thirteen chapters, treating : 1 Of the office of justice of the peace. 2 Of Lhejurisdiction of justices of the peace. 8 Of the different forms of action. 4 Of the commeticement of suits, aud the service and return of process. 6 Of the appearance of the parties. 6 Of pleadings. 7 Of witnesses, compelling the attendance thereof, taking depositions, and of oaths and affirmations. affirma-tions. 8 Of the trial, and incidents there to. j 9 Ofevidence. 10 Of the docket, and forms of docket entries. 1 11 Of judgment, costs, and filing transcrip t. ; Of appeals and wiit of certiorari. 13 Of execution and garnishment.
