Show The Late Mail Bouberv. La the Sacramento Union of Monday,, we find the following concerning the late railroad mail 'robbery on the C," P. R, R..: -J ; - The eastern bound passsnger train which left San Francisco on the morning morn-ing of January 20th was robbed on the evening of the same day at the Aha station. ' While the passengers were at supper, the' lock on the mail ear was picked and the car robbed of registered letters and a package containing $10,000 in coin.' The train stopped in its usual place, : the locomotive, express ex-press and baggage ear standing above the water tank. Both mail agents were at supper during the time the robbery was effected. So quietly was the work done that the attention of the guard in the express end of the car was not attracted. Immediate search was made by the railroad employees, em-ployees, and the mail sack found under the freight-house platform. Both sides of the sack were ripped open and the registered letters taken out. But two packages of coin were found iu the sack. Parties here started in pursuit, and it is thought the chances for the escape of the robbers are very slim. This afternoon, about i:'iO, a '"plant" was discovered under the sidewalk in front of a saloon corner of Front and Church streets, which is without doubt the greater portion of the proceeds of the late robbery of the mail car at Aha, it consisting of one package addressed to Seligman & Co., New York, containing con-taining $26,000 in - United States bonds, issued July 1st, 1S7U; fifteen registered letters, value not known; and two rolls of gold coin, yalued at about $1,700, addressed to M. Meyer, New York. .Two men have been arrested ar-rested on suspicion. - |
