Show GERMANY'S MISTAKE. In carrying out the old barbaric plan of humiliating the vanquished to the utmost, the new Emperor of Germany is making a serious mistake by hit Paris glorification at the expense of . Paris. The triumphal entry and passage pas-sage through the capital of France is simply the gratification of haughty - pride; and though it may be intended as a retributive humiliation for the like iujury inflicted on Berlin by the French in a past war, the German Emperor should remember " that earth's niuta- tionj are ceaseless, aud that he is but giving the- whole French nation a memory of bitt-rness to de-inand de-inand avenging should opportunity offer. It can add nothing to the solidity solid-ity of the German triumph. Paris, Frauee and the world know that the ' German armies can pass into, occupy and march in triumph thiough Paris. It will not add a foot more of territory to the portion that will be obtained by Germany ; ic will not iucrease the, war ; indemnity a franc ; it will only fatten German pride and leave an additional teed of bitter hatred in French bosoms, which may fructify into terrible proportions pro-portions before the next generation. Now tliat the war; may be looked up on as terminated, there i no question bat it was entered upon wi:h a view to territorial aggrin Jiz ;ment on both sides. France sought tit Rhine provir.cis east of that r'.ver ; Prussia sought Alsace and Lorraine. Prussia has conqueied. Germany uni- : ed is again an Empire, with enlarged territorial boundaries; and this should, and in wisdom would, suffice the victors. vic-tors. Yet the spirit of the conqueror seems to yearn as strongly for empty triumphs of so-called glory as in the most barbarous ages; and the substantial substan-tial results of victory are deemed incomplete in-complete without them. |
