EOriiiAS i CO; MACHINES. . r ii k no he me FAMILY SEWING MACHINF IS THE Standard Machine of tivs World! 'i'tte .ptlI Couiiulltt aj.poiuled to ti.mlue and report ou Sewing lacliin. at tlee North. Carolina State Fair, held at Kaleigb. lat week, awarded a Gold Medal to tne Florence Sewing Jlaihlne for tile ease and quletuc.. ol'tt. moTenienn, perfection and large variety of work, and invaluable new features, making ma-king It lue most valuable Sewing Maul.lne for family use. - 4fk : I Parties contemplating the purchase pur-chase of Sewing Machines are re-: re-: quested to read the following from .the New York "Tribune" of Oct. 19tb, 1670t SEAVIXG MACHINES. 1 We have recently had occasion to make some inquiries into the progress of improvement improve-ment in the mechanism of sewing machines, and were not a little surprised to learn that ; the central idea in the iirst i-avention the .shuttle still holds its place, though many auem pts have been made to supercede it. The shuttle, in combination with tie needle, is stiii the n:eans used to form the stitch, in thefleading machines, and we find that the growth of trade is chiefly with theshuttle- l uting machines. i Ihe improvements that are taking firm hold in practical use are, therefore, necessa- ! rily in connection with the Ehuttle, either in the detail of the shuttle itself, or in other parts of the machine connected i with it. to cause tne whole to operate more I perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its j use. Many important gains in this direction, t made since the first great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embodied in the "Florence" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to 1 carefully inspect the "Florence" before ma- Ihe points peculiar to this machine are: i An unusual amount of money is spent in I mailing tne "Florenee," thereby securing . the best material (steel, for instance, where j others use cast-iron ), and the finest finish of ) important parts (the shuttle, for example, j being rigidly rejected if it varies from the ' standard l-2,Cvjth of an inch !) It is constructed con-structed on the simplest scientific principles, ! entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, . and links wnich so often get perversely out of order and sorely perplex every one but the practiced machinist by their unacconnt-; unacconnt-; ablo freaks. Ihe "Florence" is so easily managed, and its use is so readily learned, that an ordinary girl of ten has sense and I muscle enough to run it perfectly. Thelock-; Thelock-; stitch, as made by the "Florence" is very regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, . and is drawn into the fabric evenly, grad-j grad-j ually, exactly., without jerking, and without causing the scam to pucker, or straining the 1 thread so as to endanger its breaking; consequently, con-sequently, veiy fine threads and light fabrics can be u;ed. Besides this, the '"Florence" (in al! but the cheapest styles) also makes tnree additional stitches a double lock, a single knot and a double knot which are ; strunjgr and more elastic than any other stitch, and which are made by no other machine, ma-chine, 'me "Florence" is the only machine , that has a reversiole leed, whereby the direction di-rection of tne sewing can be instantly , changed without stopping the work, thus enab.ig the operator to quilt r embroide- with unusual lacility, to sew backwards and 1 easily strengthen a seam wherever desired, and, finally, by a few repeated Etitches, to ia.ten ends in the quickest and EtroDgest 1 way. It ir the only machine that has a self-adjusting self-adjusting scattle-thread tension, which woris so per:e.-tly that the operator can run across the . eavi-jst seams and sew the finest linen and the thickest broadcloth in imme-' imme-' diate succession withont breaiting the thread and without chancing the needle, stitch or tension. The "i lorence" draws the thread into the cloth with nnequaled precision and certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic ";ake-cp" wheel, which disposes of the siack thread left after the stitch with an aocurate promptness that prevents a!l snarling snarl-ing or dropping of stitches, and allows the operator ;o sew backward, or to run off the cloth and on again, with perfect impunity. It has an improved elastic hemmer, exclusively exclu-sively its own, which is managed with ease, and will make a hem of any width on any material. It not only makes a perfect gather and sew; it to a band at one operation, but , it hems, and binds, and fell?, and quilts, and cords, ana tuc-is, and gathers, and braid wr.hout Lasting. Such special provision ia made agamst inj arioas wear th3t the "Flor-ence" "Flor-ence" is claimed and guaranteed by theCom- ; rany to last twice as, long without repair aa ay other shuttle machine in the market, withou: the siith:est diiScnhy. Every part oi te Jriorence' is so perfectly and permanently perma-nently adjusted, and it has so few joints and points of friction, that it runs with the utmost ut-most ease. Ihe needle is set and threaded, and the stitch is lengthened, snortened, or reverse with the utmost ut-most ease. Iu using the "Florence" neither tne wori nor the operator's dress is liable tc be soilea. Tae i lorence" with all thes c.aiiii superiority, sells at the same price as omer srsi-casj machines.
