Show TnE Chinese Massacre. A detailed de-tailed account of the lute massacre of foreigners by the Chinese in Tientzen will be found on the first page. If half the details are true it was one of the iii' st horrid butcheries of which there is resold. But we are inclined to receive it as having come somewhat after the style of the lately reported massacre of Roumanian Jews. There undoubtedly were great outrages committed com-mitted on the French and Piussian residents at Tientzen, no matter how provoked; but they have been evidently evi-dently colored and exaggerated to accomplish ac-complish a purpoEe-to stir up the Western powers and the United States against China, practically defeat the treaties lately made, and preserve the monopoly that has been enjoyed by a number of leading mercantile men at Shanghae and one or two other places. |
