Show Some People are anxious to discover dis-cover why we have been asking questions ques-tions about the supposed disposal of the penitentiary by Congress. The whole thing seemed plain enough. Congress has passed an act giving the control of penitentiaries erected at the expense of government in the Territories, Territo-ries, to United States marshals. But there is a little difficulty in the way here. Government has never been extravagantly ex-travagantly liberal towards . Utah, its action being caused to great extent we believe, by the systematic falsehoods concerning the Territory and its in habitants circulated by unscrupulous speculators, mendacious correspondents correspond-ents and mercenary knaves. It is said, by those who ought to know,' that the Goyernment did not build the peniten- - u u u i-. auu LUC Territory did conjointly. Under these circumstances, how far does tbe late act of Congress apply ? And shall the U. S. Marshal and the Warden appointed by the Legislature divide the office and honor between them? We propose pro-pose that Utah sell out its interest in the old, ricketty, tumble-down concern and let Government buy it. Then the question of adobie ownership would be settled, and Marshal Patrick could preside over its dilapidated cells with all the dignity befitting the position. Or will something else be done ? |
