Show A FKEK PRESS. Il there is any ene part of this wide Republic, more than another, where there has been oontinued shouting about "a free press," the "liberty of the press," an "unmuzzled press," it has been in Utah. A few blatant individuals in-dividuals have talked about it, written about it, and have sometimes raved about it, until a stranger would have thought the press was tied and fettered fetter-ed and muzzled in Utah worse than by any censorship ever exercised in the most despotic of European nations. na-tions. Yet with all this, whenever impecunious scribblers could get sufficient suffi-cient subsidies to set their quills run-uing, run-uing, they have given ample evidence in their tirades against and abuse of the community, that no where under the sun, was greater license of the press exercised than in this Territory. Then we have had the same cuckoo horus repeated with the refrain changed to "independent press." An "independent paper" has been called for time and again, said "independent paper" being one with the very strongest strong-est partisan bias. Such individuals did not and do not wish an independent independ-ent paper. They desire one that would gratify the malicious spleen and vindictive bitterness of a few agaiust the many ; a paper that would act as their organ and through which they could spit out their venom againt the eommunity. If any one should doubt this, they have only to mark the bitter feelings that are manifested against the Herald, Her-ald, which has the independence to speak the truth, plainly and pointedly on every subject touched in its columns, col-umns, and ask no odds of any one. We publish an independent paper ; but these "liberals" would by personal threats, by efforts at intimidation, and by every means in their power, curtail the liberty of the press, because that liberty is exerci-ed in exposing incompetency incom-petency and corruption, unum-king hypocritical pretensions and defending right and tru'h. We wih it plainly understood tla;t the Herald cares nothing about and will make no reference to individuals merely as individuals, ouly as their official course or their career affects the public. Then, they are objects for public criticism. And it is time the world should know that th;se who cry uioit loudly about the liberty of the press being infringed in Utah, and the necessity of there being an independent press here, are the mot bigotedly opposed op-posed to a free-spoken, liberal and independent in-dependent paper; and the veriest despots des-pots in desire, if they only had power to manifest it, that can be found in any country to-day claiming to be enlightened enlight-ened and free. So much for the so called "libera!-'1 of 1 tab. |
