Show Bad Condition of Affairs. The Sacramento Union of Monday last Bays : So many murders and murderous assaults have been committed in Sacra-.j mento within a few years, and so little justice appears to have been meted out in the premises, that people have about lost confidence in the law, and could at almost any time be worked up into a frame of mind that would lead them to the adoption of the vigilance committee system of redressing evils. Saturday night, appearances indicated that a demonstration of that kind was about to be made against Daniel McLaughlin, who shot Lundholm. and measures were taken by the police to prevent it The agitation on the subject sub-ject finally parsed over, under the advice ad-vice of cooler people, who wished the prisoner to "have a fair show," but it served to show the pitch to whicn the citizens have been aroused. During the forenoon, it wsi reported around town that McLaughlin was allowed great liberty at the county jail, being permitted to sit in the hall or outside the front door almost unwatched. Hearing this, committees from the Improved Order of Red Men and the Knights of 'Pythias, of which Lund holm had been a member, visited the station huuse, aDd demanded that the prisoner be locked up, and their request re-quest was complied with. It is probable prob-able that the two orders mentioned will take an active part in the prosecution prosecu-tion of the case. |
