| Show POSTERS WAR PANACEA It is true that the present administration I adminis-tration has only been in power three I months and that as yet it has no I record upon which the people can base I a judgment When Major McKinley I was elected president high hopes of good times and great prosperity were entertained and by a majority of the I people it was believed that these hopes would be realized with his inauguration I inaugura-tion as president The high hopes have not been realized why they have not it I is needless to enquire but the fact is I bald And the existence of this bald I fact that these hopes of good times and great prosperity have not been realized i is staring the Henublican party in the face and causing it and the administration admin-istration much apprehension as to the future and almost anything that would divert the public mindTrom the contemplation of the depressed condition con-dition of business with its small hope of revival in any approximately near future would be welcome That this Is so Is shown by what Hon John W Foster secretary of the treasury and of state under President Harrison said in an interview in New York last Monday Mon-day After discussing the political situation in Ohio in which he said he did not predict a walkover for the Uepublicans he said that as much as I I he deplored war he believed that a j I I war with Spain would be beneficial in many ways Then he added 1 I should deeply regret to see war but If it should come I firmly believe it j J would do more than anything else at j present to bring about better times I There are nany now not employed and I a war would make things active for a time here Cuba could be overrun and i there would be a vast field for employment employ-ment It would only be a question of a short time when Spain would be driven from Cuba but the mere equipping of a volunteer army to drive Weyler and his 200000 soldiers into the sea would increase in-crease activity wonderfully in this country Still I am for peace and I hope we will reach better times by more pacific methods I I So war at present would do more In the opinion of exSecretary of the Treassury and exSecretarv of State I John W Foster to bring about better I times than the maintenance of the gold standard the enactment of a high tariff law the appointment of a monetary I I mon-etary commission the opening of the mills or anything else So at last the I identity of the advance agent of prosperity pros-perity has been established and It is I Grim Visaged War What a comment 0 upon the administration what a confession con-fession of failure is this statement of Mr Fosters upon what would bring I better times He believes that things must become worse before they can become I come better That war would make things more active ac-tive for a time there can be no question I But after a time what then Mr Fosters firm belief that a war would do more than anything else at present to bring about better times does no credit to either his head or his heart He appears to be one of those who I firmly believe in doing evil that good may come I |
