Show WOMAN TfRRml Y URNfO SEBS RNA OF KEROSENE KERO-SENE EXPLOSIOIT Hare Exhibition of Presence of Mind With Her Clothing Ablaze From Head to Foot r Frank M Kernan wife of the Rio Grande Western telegraph operator j was terribly burned yesterday morning by an explosion of kerosene Kernan himself was badly burned while trying to extinguish the fire but his wounds are not so serious as those of his wife i In the terrible ordeal Ir Kernan gave I such an exhibition of presence of mind and rare pluck as is seldom seen in man or woman While literally i I I l 7 t o i 1 z Ak4 t i 2 f W < w rL r l i 4 1 1 r I i I i MRS PRANK Ml KEA wrapped in garments of fire she calmly directed the efforts at extinguishing the I flames urged that their child be kept out of danger and that the fire in the house be kept from spreading The affair started at G30 in the morn ing Mrs Kernan went to pour some oil from a fivegallon can into the kitchen stove A tongue of flame shot from the stove and ignited the whole can of oil The can burst throwing the blazing fluid all over her and spattering I spatter-ing it about the kitchen The lady was clad in a thick swans down night robe with a close fitting jersey suit underneath under-neath I was a moment or two before be-fore she realized how serious was the crisis but seeing that she could not extinguish ex-tinguish the flames in the kitchen and a her own clbthing burst into flames from head to foot she stepped to the parlor door and called Frank come here I am on fire Mr Kernan jumped out of bed and running in seized some chenille curtains cur-tains and throwing his wife on the floor extinguished the flames Though it took him several minutes to do so and in doing so his hands arms and face were badly burned During all the time Mrs Kernan was intelligently advisirig him how to work effectively and cautioning him about keeping the fire from spreading When the immediate danger to Ir Kernan was over Mr Kernan called for help to his neighbors Al Renshaw arrived in a moment or two and others followed rapidly The hydrant in the Kernan home was frozen and water had to be brought from neighboring houses The fire in the kitchen was soon checked The department arrived promptly in response to an alarm sent In from the nearest box but the fire was under control when they arrived Drs Joyce and Baker were summoned for Mrs and Mr Kernan and then it was seen that the ladys injuries were serious Her entire body was scorched and the flesh literally dropped from her hands and limbs Mr and Mrs Kernan live at 4GS Twentysecord street and a later examination ex-amination of the ladys wounds showed that her condition is fully as bad as at first reported She was resting easy last night under the influence of opiates op-iates and her splendid constitution may enable her to survive |
