Show TOLD IN A DREAM Tragic Episode In the Life of a Strange Woman Boston Journal Twas a clergyman who told us this story after supper as we sat on the veranda hA few years ago I was pastor of a church In a Hudson river town There was a queer family in my congregation one or two had killed themselves them-selves and they who were left were no < J like the good bad and commonplace people peo-ple of the neighborhood One girl or rather young woman interested me fascinated fas-cinated me and at the same time almost frightened me Kind generous affectionate affection-ate she had the face of Mephlstophles In her face there was hardly a suggestion of sex or humanity I firmly believe she had the gift or curse of second sight There were too many Instances ot her power for mo to remain skeptical Her brother was taken sick he had a carbuncle on his neck he was very sick His father had died of the same trouble Naturally the family was alarmed ad I spent much lime with the poor fellow One morning I called the sister met me in the hpll se was hlghjy excited Is he worse I asked No but I had such a terrible dream last night I thought I was In bed awakened from sound sleep by a ringing of the doorbell I got up put on a wrapper went to the door opened It as far as the chain would so For some reason or other It was light in the street and I saw clearly a man whom I had not seen before but whose face I shill never forget It was so ghastly He said be quiet be quiet and ho shot me through the heart 1 feel the pain now it Is terrIble I tried to soothe her I tqld her she was hysterical and should not pay attention to nightmares The brother began to mend The doctor was encouraged A week or ten days after the woman told me her dream she came to see me I said well he Is getting better isnt he She burst out crying You remember my dream Yesterday I went Into my brothers broth-ers room which was pretty dark It was the first time I had been there since he was taken sick for I was too nervous to be of any helD and my sister Is a better bet-ter nurse 301 had not seen him for sometime some-time I knocked a book oft the table and raised thtf cUrtttln to be able to get to the bed without stumbling > My brother who had been dozing saW rather sharpV Be quiet bd > qultt and I looked at him His beard had giown His face was drawn and ghastly It was the fact saw In my a dream Three dsyS after this visit the brother dicL l C |
