Show THIS COUNTY IS BROKE Selectmens Expenses Have E ten Up the Revenue SHOWING MADE BY THEM LYNN HOTVTCVEIU HAS RETIRED SOME WARRANTS I Tax Collector Checking Up Notices Assessor Begins Work For Next Year Preparing For the District Court Interesting News of the County When Assessor Lynch turned over the assessment rolls for this year to the county clerk It was announced that the taxes to tie derived from the people who have to pay money for owning property would be in the neighborhood of 120000 The taxes to be received will fall fa short of I that sum if all Indications are correct cor-rect because unless the decision of the I attorney mentioned In this paper is I changed there is likely to be some complications which will result in a loss of revenue to the county I will be remembered that when this present board of selectmen were inducte Into office it asked the privilege privi-lege of funding the indebtedness of the county by the issuance of bonds At that time the court by Mr Geddes was emphatic in saying that during the year it sayng cut don the expenses save the county anywhere from 25000 to 50000 the first year and just show folks what an economical economi-cal administration of county affairs would result in The memjbers of the court decided that the supervisors of the roads were not to be trusted to come in and tell the selectmen what repairs were needed on the roads in their respective districts dis-tricts but that they the selectmen would go out and investigate This policy was kept up and mileage piled in great heaps all through the Summer Sum-mer months which have faded away into the dim and misty past The bonds were defeated and the expense ex-pense of the election was added t the debt of the county Then came the raises in the salaries of all the officers with the exception to the clerk and the Sheriff although the former was given a better show for his white alley than the latter The investigation of county matters including the furniture contract con-tract added to the expenses Expert Accountant Anderson had a whack at the funds too for nearly ten months at 150 per month while his little son also managed to earn enough to provide pro-vide himself with clothing for a time One expense has followed another until un-til yesterday it was announced that up to date the county of Salt Lake has expended 11522856 with the appropriations appro-priations made at the last session to be included I is extremely likely that this sum will about cover the taxes which will be paid into the country treasury by the collector So it will foe seen that the amount of the indebtedness which the county was laboring under at the time the present boarcfj took hold will not be materially reduced by any of their efforts either collectively or individually in-dividually The county treasurer has retired a great many warrants on the cash which he has received from licenses Issued and it is due to the fact that the selectmen could not spend this cash that the county taxpayers can felicitate themselves on having the debt reduced at all The expenses of the county court during the year have averaged 10 47534 each month which for a reform administration is doing pretty well I is fair to presume that the expenses for this month will not equal the average mentioned unless the pauper account brings it up to these figures Outside this fund the expenses ought to be light I But the reader can see at a glance that the reforms hichwere t have been indulged by this county court are not aa huge as they might have been had strict rules of economy prevailed pre-vailed Checking Notices When the notices to taxpayers were mailed by the county collector there were vast numbers of them which came back from the postoffice the carriers having failed to find the parties to whom they were addressed The work of going over these and checking them with payments which were made by several who came in without any notice no-tice and paid up is now going on and will continue until the matter is set tied There are several hundreds of these notices and when all have been arranged according to book and page the certificates of sale will be mad mae out This work will require a few days more to complete The collector and his force are engaged in straightening straighten-ing out matters preparatory to making mak-ing the sales of property for nonfpay ment which will be ibegun in the tim prescribed by law Assessor Lynch at Work Te county assessor has already began be-gan the preparatory steps for making next years assessment The deputy James Lynch is working on the index indicating the number of transfers which have been made since the last assessment and is well on with the work This has to be done every year and is in line with the routine of the office Removing the Court As soon as Utah is admitted as a state and the three judgeselect and the are qualified the courts will be removed to the joint building In anticipation of the event the janitors are preparing the rooms and cleaning up the floors so as to be in readiness when the judiciary arrive The sheriff will remove re-move to his office on the lower floor of the building at that time where he has elegant quarters The tile floors of the structure have been in a very dirty condition on both sides of the building for some time Acid was used to clean them with poor effect until some one suggested a well Known soap preparation which used makes them look as good a new |
