Show A TWO MILLION i DOLLAR BLAZE Newport News the Scene of the Holocaust EIGHT PERSONS BADLY INJURED HARD WORK INTELLIGENTLY APPLIED OF NO AVAIL I i Flames Sweep Onward i Their Course Licking Up Vessels as Though They Were But Cips 1 Insurance is Divided Between a Large Number of Big Companies Some Thrilling Scenes Newport News Va April 27Flro broke out In the Chesapeake Ohio Rail road companys pier at an early hour this morning I Before the flames were checked damage to the extent of 2000ono had been done Two of the companys Immense Im-mense pers were destroyed and eight persons Injured some of them seriously The flames were discovered I In pier 5 I about 515 this morning and spread with such rapidity that It was impossible to make any headway against them A j I fierce north wind fanned the flames furiously fur-iously and swept them across the docks I to pier 6 which was soon burning furiously fur-iously The British ship Jdintonla which I was loading with oil tobacco and general J merchandise at pier 5 was soon ablaze The tugs pulled her out Into the middle of the river where an Ineffectual battle was waged at terrible odds against the J flames that were raging In i her Inflammable cargo She was burned to the water line j at 10 oclock tonight The Norwesian steamship Solvleff which was loading grain at pier 5 wa gin 5 next caught The crew managed to escape by climbing down the hawsers to the pier Meanwhile the Chesapeake Ohio tug Wanderer which had caught fire had burei to the waters edge The German Ger-man sailing ship J D Blschoff taking on staves from the north side of pier 6 also caught The flames obtained such a hold on her that they could not be conquered and she went to the bottom at 6 clock this afternoon The crew of the vessel had a very narrow escape from being cremated They were aroused by John Anderson one of the crew and were only rescued t with the greatest difficulty after the captain cap-tain and boatswain had been badly 1 burned The heavy north wind and the heroic efforts of the fire department saved the large grain elevator of tho Chesapeake Ohio company from destruction de-struction The fire was rapidly spreading across the conveyors that connect the elevator with the piers but with < he aid of a locomotive and an immense chain the conveyor supports were pulled out the conveyors themselves torn down and this danger averted f1r i this afternoon the fire had spent Its furv and waswell under control con-trol i trolThe follows The Injured so fa a known are as Captain Foest of the tUg Wanderer slightly burned slihty bure John Diggs mate of the Wanderer badly burned about the head and arms Captain Krite of the ship Bischoff per < haps fatally burned and boatswain of the same vessel who was terribly burned i about the arms There are vague rumors of many persons per-sons having lost their Ueshut they cannot can-not be traced to any rciable soune I The Chesapeake 8 Ohio Railroad com SI any estimate their loss at about 300 000 which isfully covered by Insurance II The total loss Including the three ship will probably reach S200COO The insurance is divided among a largo number of big companies The steamshT Clntonla was owned by Robinson Sons North Shields tho Sole by C M Phelson Son Bergen Bremen and the Blschoff by J J Blschoff 3 4 |
