Show TORRE S MfN RfADY TO QUIT UTAH TROOP WANTS TO BE MUSTERED OUT Believe the War Is Over and Would Rather Come Home Than Do Garrison Gar-rison Duty In Cuba Special to The Herald Jacksonville Fla Aug 15Torreys rough riders are still in camp here performing the usual routine of camp duties drills etc though they were detached from the third division Seventh army corps and placed in a division by themselves several days agoA very strong sentiment prevails among the men that the regiment is destined to see no active service since peace has been declared and hostilities have ceased This feeling has been increasing since the protocol last week until yesterday when it became so general in A and I troops that a petition peti-tion addressed to Colonel Torrey was circulated in these troops asking that he use his influence to procure discharges dis-charges for all men who did not desire to remain longer in the service The petition sets forth that peace has been declared and there seems to be nothing in prospect except possibly garrison duty in Cuba That the men enlisted for the war and are averse to serving as an army of occupation Fortyseven I troop nten have thus far signed and it Is said troop A is practically unanimous in favor of the petition It is also said the other troops have secured copies which are being generally signed The commissioned officers with two or three exceptions have discouraged the movement one of the exceptions being a captain who is said to have I stated that in his opinion the war Was over and he expected to resign |
