issued is-sued the following fol-lowing order I regarding the observance o Memorial da > on May 31 Headquarters Department of Utah Grand Army of the Republic Salt Lake City April 12 1S07 General Orders No 3 Series 1897 MEMORIAL DAY Monday May 31 is the day sacred to the Grand Army of the Republic when the graves of the comrades who have preceded us In passing the dark river and joining the Grand Army above shall be strewed with the emblems of love and devotion bright flowers of spring Their troubles and sufferings are over their journeys ended they have passed in review before the grand commander and are quartered with their comrades on the other shore At this season of the year when nature na-ture weaves a covering of green smoothing the rough spots and beautifying beauti-fying the entire landscape let us deck the graves of our comrades with the emblems of red white and blue crown them with beautiful flowers garland them with wreaths of ivy and water them with tears of affection As the years roll on the ranks of the comrades are depleted great gaps are opening here and there and the obligations obliga-tions to the fallen one are sustained by fewer shoulders Let the Sons of Veterans step into line and assist in paying this annual tribute of respect to the honor of the departed heroes that they may be ready to continue this labor of love when the last comrade com-rade is laid to rest The department commander calls particular attention to the resolutions adopted by the fifteenth annual encampment en-campment of this department sent with these orders and urges all both comrades com-rades and citizens to abstain from all labor and frivolity on this day devote it to the veterans teach the young lessons les-sons of patriotism and by your example ex-ample will these principles be so engrafted I en-grafted into their minds that time can never efface them The school officials are requested to prepare suitable memorial exercises for the observance of the Friday preceding preced-ing Memorial day by the children of the public schools The commander requests the pastors of all churches as Memorial day occurs oc-curs on Sunday though the Grand Army Ar-my will observe the next day Monday by public exercises and decorating the comrades graves to prepare patriotic sermons which will instruct the young and Instill into their hearts respect for the old soldier love for the flag and honor for the constitution and laws of our republic which cost so many lives to maintain In the observance of Memorial day the posts should Invite the Womans Relief Corps Sons of Veterans civil societies national guard and the citizens citi-zens to aid in the patriotic exercises Post chaplains will immediately after the observance of Memorial day forward for-ward to these headquarters full reports re-ports of all exercises commemorative of the occasion The commanderinchlef requests that those wjio are financially able assist as-sist in the decorating and flagging the graves of the comrades in the cemeteries ceme-teries In the south by sending such contributions through the assistant ad jutantgeneral to the national headquarters head-quarters from which office proper distribution dis-tribution will be made All flags hoisted on Memorial day must be at halfmast Blanks for semiannual reports will I be very shortly sent to the posts and the commanders are requested to see that these are promptly tilled out at the last meeting in June and with the per capita tax immediately forwarded to the assistantadjutantgeneral The commander suggests thateach comrade shall appoint himself a committee com-mittee of one who shall bring Into his post one or more recruits There are hundreds of old soldiers living in cur Immediate neighborhood who should be members of some post and he believes that personal effort will secure the greater number if not all of them The following comrades have been appointed aidesdecamp on the staff of the department appreciate the hearty cooperation of the public school officials teachers and pupils of Utah for the patriotic part they take with tls In the proper observance of Memorial day and on the occasion of flag presentation to schools Resolved That our department commander com-mander bv special request ask the public school officials throughout our state to arrange for appropriate exercises ex-ercises on the afternoon of Friday preceding pre-ceding Memorial day Resolved That as Memorial day occurs oc-curs this year on Sunday that our department j de-partment commander by special request re-quest ask all ministersto give suitable recognition to the same in their respective re-spective churches Resolved That we beg to remind the public that within a few years the last old soldier in the war of the rebellion I will be mustered out and laid to rest and that the sacredness with which Memorial day is observed will do much to perpetuate the country they fought to save Resolved That these
