Show EDW educational DUCAT M mc IONAL davis county school items A v V iw GA palmer editor miss millie porter and miss ella tolman asso editors deficiencies in school work dear editor in response to the earnestin earnest invitation vi tation extended to parent and patrons of tho the school to contri bute to the educational calums of the clipper I 1 take the liberty of expressing a few thoughts on what I 1 consider to be the deficiencies in in the school work of the present in the first place there is it seems to me a decided lack of thoroughness in the work done my ch children ildren seem to know nothing well they have a mere smattering smattering terin ta of a great Z reat many some things 0 but they are rm great ly lacking 0 in that quick decisive accuracy which makes their knowledge know lege available and valuable at the right time lilor for instance my seventh grade girl know mow her multiplication tables yet she is struggling 0 t or straggling stra ta along 0 with her arithmetic spending twice the time with tier her problems that she would need to if she was accurate with the tables she still adds by ones having li avin no knowledge whatever of the combinations of num bers aers she has to deal with she cant divide except by the most laborious and tedious effort I 1 am aware that the teacher may say she is dull and its her fault but im not half inclined to believe this for she tells me they never drill in school on the tables or combinations if this is true then the fault lies with the school children will learn these things thili s only by incessant drill stimulated by a desire to excell then there is the readia reading a most painful ul process to listen to poor articulation poor pronunciation cia tion stumbling and stammering in through by slow defees her les lions such auch a way as to really harrow up ones soul showing ca a lack of thoroughness 0 in the teaching of the mechanical part of reading the spelling is much the same unc uncertain ertain incorrect wretched even on the little every day wor Is the other branches are disposed of much the same way she cosent know how to address an envelope properly or write a letter she comes home with a ion long 0 ri rig a ma a roll mar of what she calls dia 0 raming that I 1 know no about than she does upon this she spends much time in the evening it may have its educational value I 1 am not prepared to condemn it but it seems to me if she were spending 0 her time learning 0 to write letters stories or something 0 that would increase her power of expression it would be a much more profitable expenditure pend iture of time As in farming 0 A little farm well tilled means A little barn well filled so it seems to me that the essential things M in education well drilled into the mind will be for more satisfactory than a lar large ge scope of knowledge only poorly learned the memory work ingen in general cral is very much neglected in the old schools days we delighted to com commit mit pieces to memory or as we said learn it by heart how flow muil much of this kind hind of work do the children do now the memry memory is a precious faculty of the mind and should bo be so deve developed lopea that it will boa source of constant service and jy through life an interested parent |
