Financer this week says The statement of the assocIated asso-cIated banks of New York city for the I week ending January 18 reflects the contraction con-traction which has been going on for the past month and Incidentally the preparations prepara-tions which made to meet the tonR are being te I new bond issue I Money continues to flow to this center without interruptions and the movement resulted In a gain of over 5000000 for the week just ended The advance in exchange ex-change rates at several western points is an indication that New York funds are in stronger demand The liquidation which ha resulted in the past months or since the first noticeable effect of the Venezuelan scare may be estimated when i is stated that the contraction In loans of the New York clearing house banks has been fully 5456SSOOO and the total is now the lowest since the previous panic The gain in cah as reported in the statement state-ment for the week was 5465200 I has been generally assumed as an inevitable result of the bond lan that a stringency in the money market would be felt next month but a prominent New York president presi-dent received a telegram a day or two since from Secretary Carlisle m which the letter gave assurances that not the slightest fear need be felt in that regard re-gard and that the treasury would exercise exer-cise its utmost power and authority to prevent such a contingency I WALL STREET New York Jan lSrhe stock market York today opened irregular but almost at the outset a heavy tone was apparent and general weakness quickly developed The arguments advanced against prices were the familiar ones of uncertainty regarding the immedIate financial and political outlook out-look The bear professional fully approved ap-proved the misunderstanding prevailing until after the close of business regarding the alleged destination of the British flying fly-ing squadron for American waters Gloomy forecasts as to the business outlook out-look for the granger properties were also circulated The selling movement was well nUiwted and material net losses were scored The firal nrices were at about the lowest low-est of the day SreCulatll for the week has been dominated dom-inated by sensitiveness on the part of the investors and dealers over the domestic do-mestic monetary outlook and the unsettling unset-tling foreign political rumors which the close of in I provisions having died away to a considerable 1 con-siderable extent The temper of the wheat market was a very uncertain one at first however for after a sudden sud-den spurt at the opening from G01 for May up to 60 it hung back and fell again to C04 before an hour of the session had passed The business was I largely local but there was some buyIng buy-Ing orders from S1 Louis as the price a going up and selling orders from I New York when i was on the fence I around 6060 The New York sell ing orders and the letting go of considerable con-siderable lines of long wheat by local bulls brought out the reaction referred to above But the market absorbed all the wheat offered during the decline and was again up to 60l by 1 oclock The second bulge did not stop until 6060 had been paid and after that experience the short sellers evinced a disposition to act with more circum spectlpn than they did on the first rise The market got its chief strength from the growing apprehension that the sit I nation was shaping for another scare The report that a British squadron was on its way to this country caused alarm among shorts and there was active covering and good investment j buying while there was not much wheat for sale The damp rainy weather in this section and tae cold wave following closely upon it caused some apprehension of damage and was also an Important element In creating I the bullish feeling which became so universal In the last hour of the ses 1 i skm The price here rose to 61c about 1 twenty minutes from the close and was still bringing 60 when the closing I clos-ing bell sounded A heavy business i j was done i j Corn was fairly active and fn in spite of the lower provision market from which It has been taking Its tone lately In oats the feeling was firm in sym j I I I pathy with whet and corn and prices were 4c higher on May and o up on other deliveries 7c Business In the pork pit was much smaller than it was on the previous daye but interest was still sufficient to keep a good sized crowd around the center of acton There was an absence ab-sence of outside support however and prices declined somewhat The leadttg rUtUtf9 were 5 foU j II t I
