Show HIPORTAAT SUGGESTIONS If the chamber of commerce meeting on Tuesday night had done nothing else than afforded an occasion Jw the reading of Colonel John W Donnellans communication and provided for its publication in the press of this city it would have accomplished a good work The colonel suggests First that Judge Colburn be sent east through all the chief cities and monied centers to deliver lectures illustrated il-lustrated by stereopticon views on the mines and minerals of Utah and also on the agricultural and other resources of the state Second that the chamber of commerce com-merce take an active interest in the federal building to be erected in this city with a view to very much increase the congressional appropriation proposed pro-posed It is now 500000 the colonel thinks it should be raised to one million mil-lion Third that an effort be made to secure se-cure a United States branch mint for Salt Lake Fourth that Fort Douglas be recommended rec-ommended as one of the permanent army ar-my posts and that the necessary governmental gov-ernmental appropriations be secured to rebuild the officers quarters as well as for parking and beautifying the grounds of the reservation Fifth that the chamber of commerce become actively interested in the matter mat-ter of securing the headquarters of the Oregon Short Linc and Utah Northern railroad in this city and recommends the appointment of a committee to take immediate steps to bring it about Sixth that steps be taken to encourage encour-age the erection of three more beet sugar factories in the state one at Mill Creek near Salt Lake City another an-other in Tooele county and one between be-tween this city and Ogden Seventh that the chamber agitate for an experimental station of the agricultural agri-cultural college in this valley and another an-other in the southern part of the state in order that a greater variety of sol and climate may be properly tested And lastly he suggests that ithe chamber cham-ber of commer itself be moved nearer near-er the business center of the city We have thus condensed the suggestions sugges-tions of Colonel Donnellan that our readers may have presented to them in one view the numerous things connected with a citys growth and a states de velopment with which a chamber of I commerce may concern itself and seeing see-ing this that our business men may I discover how necessary to our material development is such an institution In addition to hearing the communication communi-cation of Colonel Donnellan read the chamber considered the desirability o a general bankrupt law and the establishment estab-lishment of a United States assay office It decided that a public meeting shall soon be called to consider the future o the state of Utah and appointed a committee to enquire into the equities which exist between the citizens of thin > city and electric light company From this enumeration of the main items of business considered by the chamber it is again to be seen that the < institution is engaged in that kind OC work that looks to the business interests in-terests of the community and again leads one to the reflection that it ii I just the institution in which our business busi-ness men should take profound interest inter-est and by the way the prospect for increasing its membership is growing brighter A business man not connected with the chamber of commerce should bE looked upon as being behind the times |
