Relatively Active For a Half Holiday Governments Advanced Ad-vanced Slightly General Glimps f cs of the Markets of the World F New York Aipril 4The resumption of business on the stock exchange after t af-ter the holiday was characterized by a fairly active and advancing market t The foreign exchanges were closed on I account of eastern holidays and the I I local dealers had the speculation entirely I en-tirely to themselves The distribution it of business was indifferent but important 4 portant gains were scored in many instances The industrials attracted the most attention with Tobacco especially es-pecially noteworthy for activity and erratic fluctuations A slight gain in the stock was noted at the outset but under heavy offerings from the traders r the prices declined 2 < per cent to SS with a rally to S9 following but the stock left off at a loss of r per cent Sugar gained a point on pool buying The improved outlook in the iron and steel trade was reflected in again a-gain of 2 per cent in Tennessee coal and under similar influences Colorado Fuel rose 1 per cent The movement in the grangers and other leading shares was confined to fractions with gains general The closing was strong j and at the best figures of the day Although the volume of business in stocks in the week has been comparatively compara-tively light partly owing to the practical practi-cal double holiday at the close the speculation has not lacked developments develop-ments of the most sensational order recalling to a considerable extent the turpitude of the wreckers of the old Colorado company We refer to the extraordinary performance of the managers man-agers of the American Tobacco company com-pany in contrasting within a short three months the passage of the regular V reg-ular quarterly dividend on the common stock and the declaration on the recent date of a disbursement on the common com-mon stock of 2 per cent in cash and 20 per cent in scrip When the dividend t was passed the step was considered to warrant an investigation by the governing j L gov-erning committee of the New York stock exchange and It is more than probable that the recent totally unexpected L unex-pected liberality of the directors will t call for a rigorous investigation by the same body as to the strategy employed em-ployed For a long time past the manipulation of the street has been milked right and left alternately The general market movement was k Irregular but a firm undertone prevailed < t pre-vailed and stocks were purchased with more confidence than for some time Ii past although the dealings were strictly professional in character The grangers were in brisk demand Bonds were relatively active for a half holiday with the Northern Pacific issues the features at sharp gains on the announcement of the declaration that the plan of reorganization was operative The general market ruled strong and higher on scales of 1365 000 The market during the week was strengthened by favorable influences t governing the shares speculation and the dealings were on a fairly large scale The gains range up to 5 percent per-cent in the speculative Hens the last 4 in Chicago and STATEMENT New York April 4The New York Financier says this week The statement of the clearing house banks of New York City for the weekending week-ending April 4 is unimportant in its general features the operations of the week being shown in the decrease in the reserve leaving the excess cash in banks at 17005975 as against 13929 925 fur the same week last year The excess reserve touched its lowest point 13413450 on March 30 1895 and from that time began to increase standing four weeks later at 25250675 But during that time the imports of gold were in excess of exports and the movement from Europe during the j next month or May amounted to 3308869 The interior movement at the same time was heavy the reserve I of the New York banks standing on May 25 1895 at 40005150 This showing show-ing is interesting in view of the present pres-ent situation when the total reserve of the banks is decreasing and a resumption re-sumption of gold exports is announced to begin next Sunday by one firm The government also has a large sum of money deposited with designated banks and a call for a portion of this nay be made at any time The movement move-ment from the interior has not been as yet a factor The reserves of many ot the New York banks are already down to the required limit and the 4 outlook denpite the comparisons with last year does not seem to favor easier eas-ier rates at present The explanation of this Hies in the fact that the conditions condi-tions are more normal and the locking up of a great deal of money by the bond transaction has counteracted the inflation from which the country has been suffering since 1892 SPECIE New York April 4The exports of specie from the port of New York for the week amounted to 1110780 in silver sil-ver The imports were Gold 13729
