Graduates Superintendent Superintend-ent Millsjiaufflt anti the Trustees Have Made the Best Arrangement Possible Under Unfavorable Circumstances Cir-cumstances Tlie State University Now that the public schools have opend for the year the old question of whether SaLt Lake will support a high school is again being agitated This question has been discussed more or less for the past four years and has ended where It began in talk The high school on South Temple street opened its doors Monday morning and already has enrolled 500 pupils and this number wiB grow There would undoubtedly have ben more already if i were no for the imperfect aoeomzno datlons There were 280 pupils who finished at the public schools last year and out of that number there were only 12 who reported at the opening of the high school This is caused largety n who have doubt by the fact that pupils had the privilege of studying in our public school buildings which are equipped with every convenience and are unsurpassed by any public schools in the country refuse to enter the high school with nfl it disadvantages The high schoo1 building was formerly a furniture store which has been remodeled modeled and made a attractive as possible There are also a row of stores on Richards street which are used a class rooms but they a all unsatisfactory The tory for this particular purpose ventilation is poor a a also tlva light and the heating faculties Despite all reports to the contrary though the repor rnr pupLs who have entered are being well taken care of and more can be accommodated tken cae modated lif necessary Everything Is lt necesa being done by the teachers t make the pupils comfortable and in the majority of cases the pupils also are accommodating accommo-dating themselves so the circumstances But Chat this state of things cannot goon go-on indefinitely is admitted by al The residents will of course realize this reidents wil same time A fine high school building some tme would cose 150000 This su when would cot looked at in the aggregate sounds large especially so during these hard lae times but it is believed if the matter wa tes put in figures showing how little each citizen would have t pay if a citzen slight additional ta was levied instead addi0na stead of how much the proposition would meet with favor There is a rental of 3000 being paid yeariy for rentl use of the high school building This rent will have to be paid right along with a prospect of paying more which shows that it i Important to would take Immediate seeps The rent pay interest on a large sum of money iteest on invested in a muchneeded high school building Until suitable accommodations buldg Untl school cannot floss are provided the shol cnot tol ae in the its rightful importance assume imporne ae corrmunity rghtul present state it doors to the throw its can only trow open it dors public once a year while if the proper building was provided the pupils could welcome the public oftener and the r welce publc otee sule would b of lasting benefit to all If it continues longer L this state the high regard of both community and pupiis will be permanently Impaired Already discontent Is manifest among both patrons and pupils and unless i immediate steps are taken the school will experience a severe backset t So far the work done has been a high grade The pupils are received on their diplomas at several leading colleges col-leges and if this work is to be continued con-tinued the citizens will have to see to it that a building so necessary and In which such good work could b accomplished accom-plished should b provided The practice of marching large classes from the South Temple street building down to the recitation rooms j and back through all kinds of weather bc trough al o is a serious matter in itself One suggestion that has been made is that until a suitable building with i accommodation for all is secured one of the classes perhaps the senior might b housed in another locality which would extent relieve the pressure to a large THE UsrrVERSITY The entrance examinations to the University of Utah will b held in the university main building commencing at 10 a m
