Show I I l ROWNINrS PEACEMAKER Utah Invention That Will Spread Destruction Among the Spaniards The following Associated Press dispatch dis-patch dated New York was printed in the Gerald Friday morning A test was made today of one of a I consignment of just rapidfire guns I received from the Colt factory at Hartford Hart-ford It is known as the six millimetre and rapidfire automatic Colt and is capable of firing 200 shots a minute with a range of 2000 yards The test j proved that the bullet would pass through a steel plate threeeighths Man M-an inch thick two sides of a coil of pipe 20 inches of wcod backing and another I an-other steel plate of oneeighth of an inch in thickness These guns of which I three have arrived will be used along the rail of vessels against torpedo boats and also in the fighting tops j the projectile has received Its maximum maxi-mum velocity without decreasing its range or penetration In operation the feed belt is entered and a lever thrown down opening the breech and feeding the first cartridge from the belt In to the carrier The lever Is ithen released and it swings forward closing and locking the breech transferring the cartridge to the barrel and cocking the hammer On pulling the trigger the shot is fired and before the bullet makes its exit from the muzzle the powder gases expand and acting upon the ingenious breech mechanism eject the shell and feed another cartridge By continuous pressure on the trigger the shots are discharged automatically at the rate of 400 or more per minute instead of 200 aa stated in the dispatch dis-patch The hammer of the gun Is 1 ji E t I BROWNINGS GUN MOUNTED ON TRIPOD A fact most Interesting to western people and not stated by the dispatch Is that this marvelous fighting machine is the Invention of an Ogden man John M Browning and it is one of the hundred hun-dred or more wonderful inventions that have made him famous among the manufacturers of firearms in America and Europe The Colt automatic gun referred to in the dispatch has been adopted by the government for use in the navy after a severe competitive test It consists con-sists of one barrel attached to a breech casing in which the mechanism for charging firing and ejecting is contained The cartridges are automatically auto-matically fed to the gun 1 > y means of belts which are coiled In boxes containing con-taining 100 250 or 500 cartridges each The automatic action of the gun is effected by means of the pressure of the powder gases in the barrel after i I used as a piston for an air pump which forces a strong jet of air into the chamber and through the barrel removing all residue and doing away with the water jacket for cooling The gun can be constructed for rifle ammunition of any kind and is particularly partic-ularly adapted to the use of the army I and navy It weighs but 40 pounds and I can be fitted to different kinds of carriages car-riages to a warships fighting mast or I to the ships rail In a recent test made to demonstrate the durability of its working parts rapidity of action I and nonliability of fouling some 8000 rounds were fired the gun going I through the whole test without a hitch At 200 yards for accuracy 100 consecutive consecu-tive hits were made in 16 seconds I Many a Spaniard will be gathered to his fathers by Brownings Peacemaker Peace-maker should this country become involved in-volved In war with Spain |
