Show THE PARTY LINE Unless an international bimetallic conference shall meet and establish a ratio on which silver and gold shall be coined by the commercial nations the silver question will become the paramount issue in the next presidential presiden-tial campaign It cannot be suppressed sup-pressed The country is awakened to its Importance The very efforts of the goldites to misrepresent the position posi-tion of the silver men gives the cause of bimetallism the greater prominence promi-nence One of the endeavors that will be made by the Republican party to shelve the currency question will be to revive the subject of protection to American Industries It will fall The great body of the people do not want another unsettlement of the tariff question They may desire a few modifications in the present system But they are and will be against any great disturbance which would bring on further disquietude inbusiness and industrial circles The signs all point to a marked distinction dis-tinction on the coinage question be twen the two great political parties of the country The Heralds views on this matter appear to he entertained by Gen John M Thurston who is a prominent Republican and well posted on party affairs and whose remarks I II will be found in another column It Is that the Democrats will declare for I the free and unlimited coinage of silver I sil-ver at the ratio of 16 to 1 and the Republican Re-publican party while putting protection protec-tion to the front will adopt the straddling strad-dling position on coinage assumed in 1S92The The Republican convention and Republican Re-publican leaders so far avoid the direct di-rect issue International bimetallism and a prudent enlargement of the use of silver as money is about as far as they go The action of the Republicans Republi-cans at Denver in refusing to stand uncompromisingly on a straight silver demand at the Cleveland convention shows the spirit of western Republicanism Republi-canism on this point We do not say I all Republicans There are some who are determined to stand by silver even before party and they will have to make a bolt when the decisive hour arrives The Democratic opportunity is at hand The majority of the party are in favor of free silver coinage They must stand firmly together The minority min-ority must be made to give way Victory Vic-tory depends on that position A Democratic Dem-ocratic silver candidate will be elected A straddler will stand no show Democracy Dem-ocracy and true bimetallism must be declared Identical Republicanism and sham bimetallism are the same and will lose because of that fact The tariff must be made a minor consideration consid-eration The free and unlimited coinage coin-age of gold and silver must be the one great purpose and party cry for 1896 |
