Show SILVER A3TD THE DEMOCRACY I The Herald endorses every practical movement for the restoration of silver to Its former position as a money metal We favor the free and unlimited coinage coin-age of both silver and gold at a ratio of 16 to 1 This is not merely because it would revive a drooping industry reopen re-open closed mines set men to work who are now suffering under enforced idleness put new vigor into all branches of trade and industry and prove the material salvation of the west but because we verily believe It would be for the benefit of the whole country and the prosperity of all classes but the money lending and gold speculating fraternity Therefore we are so far in sympathy with the silver agitators who ar now stirring up the west and who we hope will revolutionize the east as to wish them complete success in their endeavors endeav-ors to rehabilitate the white metal As to their effort in the direction of a third party that is an entirely different j tiling It is true that some disclaimers are entered against the idea that there is 0 anything partisan about this silver crusade But yet behind it there is a diver candidate for the presidency and with it such denunciations of both the great political parties as to show which running pJ way e tide is In our opinion the drawing away of Democrats to any other party would I xesult more in doing injury both to I the Democratic party and to the silver cause than In good to anybody If the silver agitation in progress shall bring about a determination on the part of the cnaiority of the voting citizens of the United States to put only silver j f J men in national offices it will proe a j f 4 bn to thc country The gentlemen I iVf e tigaged ul > it ° should to that extent if 0 J > oJ u u 0 u receive the cordial support of silver Democrats everywhere But beware of being drawn away form the party which can and we hope will put silver back on the regal throne side by side with its natural associate money monarch A third party under whatever name cannot win it may poll a large number of votes But it cannot elect a President of the United States Nor can it elect a silver House of Representatives That is of more importance than a silver President iSome people seem to think that if a President thoroughly committed to silver ver can be elected the whole business will be accomplished But with a House of Representatives largely Republican Re-publican as It will be in the next Congress Con-gress a silver President no matter of what party would be powerless in the silver cause When the silver Senators from Utah take their seats the Senate will have a very satisfactory silver side to it If a majority of silver Representatives can toe elected to accompany the election elec-tion of a silver Presldent victory will be assured To accomplish both we urge upon Democrats everywhere to give the sIlver sIl-ver movement all the support they can to the line of a divergence from the Democratic party They should remain in the ranks They can do more inside than outside Delegates must be sent to the national convention conven-tion who will drown the cries of the gold monometallists and nominate sound silver candidates They must vote in their own party for silver Congressmen The money of the Constitution Con-stitution the old Democratic bimetallic doctrine must be contended for In this line of battle will the Democratic Demo-cratic party conquer Support silver and silver advocates Swell the rising tide throughout the land But kee within the party that survives all assaults as-saults and overcomes all calamities Therein is safety to the country and triumph to the silver cause Drift away from It and the result will be certain disaster |
