Show I THE POLITICAL ARENA II I I I I Democratic Campaign Will Be I Opened Up Tonight WHIT KERWILL SUCCEED LABORING MEN ARE WORKING HARD IN HIS INTEREST Imnortnnt Democratic Meeting Held I Last Nifflit Jolm T CaIne Made u I Manly Speech in Saiipete on the Election Matters Wells and Allen Al-len Making a Poor Impression This will be a very important day for Utah The Democrats will open their campaign and from now on until election will make a fight which will give them victory or defeat with everything pointing to the former It will be a gre opening too Logan will hear the future governor and congressman con-gressman Park City will hear the future senator J L RawlIns and David Da-vid Evans Provo will hear the present pres-ent governor the future secretary of state and future attorneygeneral Price will hear Commissioner Letcher and L R Rhodes nominated for the district bench In this there will be presented a splendid contrast to the course of the Republicans in having their campaign opened in one place only and that place not a large city A final meeting to discuss plans of campaign and secure the services and ideas of speakers was held last evening even-ing at the Democratic state headquarters headquar-ters It was called for Sunday in order or-der that everything might be discussed discuss-ed up to the last possible moment as well as to suit the convenience of various var-ious persons whose presence was desired de-sired Judge King Judge Dusenberry S I R Thurman and E A Wilson came from Provo Probate Judge Judd from Sanpete David Evans and Henry Peery from Ogden C H Hart and Noble Varrum jr from Logan E A McDaniel from the south Judge Powers Pow-ers J R Letcher J H Moyle John T Caine J L Rawlins Fisher Harris Judge McNally Frank Harris J B Rawlins Marshal Brigham Chairman D C Dunbar H P Henderson and others came from Salt Lake Matters of interest to the party were discussed and the speakers present were asked how much time they could give to the campaign Most of those present promised their services during the balance of the campaign There was the best of feeling among those present Each one had encouraging reports to bring in regarding the status of affairs in his own county and said that with improved conditions superiority super-iority of ticket and other favorable things it seemed certain that victory would be given to the Democrats this fallThis This is undoubtedly a Democratic year I Whitaker Wdll Win George A Whitaker the labor candidate can-didate for the state senate on the Democratic Dem-ocratic ticket is bound to win in this county The Republicans claim that they will carry Salt Lake by 2000 majority ma-jority and that it will be absolutely impossible for him to win The Democrats Demo-crats however are figuring much more closely They are marking the signs of the times and on a conservative I basis will not allow the Republicans more than 1COO majority in this county Ion I-on their strongest man on the state ticket They expect moreover that this will be cut down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 Sentiment is changing so rapidly and conditions are so different this year that it looks as though the Democrats would carry the I county outside and make havoc inside the city Under such conditions Mr Whitaker will not need to make a very great gain to place him in the legislature It is claimed thatthe Republican labor vote in the city will largely exceed 300 Whitaker is endorsed by all the the laborers la-borers in the city The latest endorsement endorse-ment comes from the Retail Clerks union a very powerful organization which gave him the following under its official seal Salt Lake City Sept 16 1895 George A Whitaker Salt Lake City Dear Sir and BrotherAt a regular meeting of the Retail Clerks Union held on September 12th your nomination nomina-tion for the office of state senator received re-ceived the hearty endorsement of the union and they pledge themselves asa as-a labor union to support you at the I polls as a body In the movement for the recognition of laboring men in the Ij offices in the gift of the people the union selected you as the represntative laboring man feeling that in order to make their voting power felt they must act as a unit without consideration considera-tion of party lines With this end in view I am instructed to acquaint you with the action of the union Fraternally Frater-nally yours JOHN C TRIETHE WAY Recording Secretary Whitaker Cluhs Good Work The Whitaker club recently formed by the workingmen of this city is I also doing a great deal It is nonpartisan non-partisan its membership being composed com-posed of Democrats Republicans and Populists the last two outnumbering the first It holds weekly meetings where labor addresses are delivered I by men of all political shades all of them endorsing Whitaker Republicans like J L Frank have been brought forward as speakers and have endorsed Whitaker This club is reaching out with a campaign organization under Thomas F Thomas and is i doing some of the best campaign work being done anywhere in the city It is wheeling all the laboring men into line for Whit aker and will make itself felt before the end of the campaign A large number of the workingmen who voted the Republican ticket last year will vote the Democratic ticket this year They have become disgusted with the course taken by the Republicans Republi-cans in their nominations and have seen the effects of Democratic policy in the return of prosperity after the McKinley bill had been swept away The Whitaker club will hold a meet ing next Thursday evening to be ad dressed by S W Stewart The ladies campaign committee of 100 will meet at Democratic headquarters headquar-ters at 3 oclock this afternoon to consider con-sider important business f The general council of United Democratic Demo-cratic clubs will hold a meeting on Tuesday night The Tuscarora society willalso hold a meeting on that night Both will be at Democratic headquarters headquar-ters It S I Denied the Charge John T Caine and J L Rawlins returned re-turned last evening from a trip to Sanpete county where they held a meeting at Ephraim on Saturday evening even-ing Those who were present say that the meeting was one of the most successful suc-cessful ever had in the county Mr Caine went there for a purpose John M Zane has been down through the county charging shamelessly that Mr Caine had a hand in the alleged election frauds Others in the county have been insinuating the same thing The work was cowardly Mr Caire went there for th purpose of settling it before it had gone very far and after his clean cut denial of the whole thing the Republicans must either prove the charge or have their insinuations insinua-tions come back on them as a boomerang boome-rang In reply to the insinuations Mr Caine said that those who knew him and of his services to the people would not believe the story against him but he wanted to say to those who did not know him that he denied the charges first and last and dared the Republicans Republi-cans to meet the issue He said that he held the ballot in such esteem that if it had been possible for him last year to have changed the result by turning one ballot wrongfully and no one would have known it yet he would not have turned the ballot He said when he reached Sanpete countj Frank Cannon and C W Bennett were already there He had not seen or touched a Sanpete ballot box or so far as he knew talked with a judge of election The effect of the honest manly speech made by Mr Caine will be productive of great good in the county as it puts the Republicans in a very embarrassing position Not a Good Impression Heber CM Wells slept in Salt Lake city last night He came in yesterday feeling very tired after his trip through the northern counties and will renew re-new his journey with less buoyant spirits than he had when he started out Republicans claim that ther meetings so far have been very successful suc-cessful They say they have had very large crowds and that the people have been very much taken by their candidates A greatly different tale however comes from the Democrats who have been in districts through which the Republicans have been going They say that the meetings have been largely composed of boys who go to hear the glee club The impression made by the speakers is very poor The Republicans admit that Wells is boyish in his speeches while Allen is cold and hard with slightly too much noise and too little magnetism This is indeed a Democratic year It Was the Ticket The incident happened in the Tenth ward store Half a dozen men were discussing politics A Republican of the deepest dye one who has worked hard in the previous campaigns was standing listening to the talk when suddenly he broke in with the remark Well I guess the Democrats will sweep the territory this fall Why I thought you was a Republican Re-publican said one I suppose I am Well dont you believe in the principles of the party any more Yes Then why do you make that remark re-mark The Republican looked at his inquisitor in-quisitor a moment and then in emphatic em-phatic language with a sweep of his arm he blurted out I Well great suffering Moses look at I the tickets I No more explanation was needed i The Populist nominees true to the I promise made in their convention I j have challenged the Republican and I Democratic nominees to joint debate II i I As the Populists are hardly on the I high road to victory the other parties 1 II will hardly feel like furnishing them audiences Henry W Lawrence j i i would make a good showing in joint i debate with the other candidates but imagine the spectacle of Hogan meet I ing the broad guaged Roberts i M W I i i Chairman Parsons intends to bomj I bard the county precincts this week I and next with a lot of Republican 1 orators It will be noticed in their I speeches that no one will mention the salary grabbing propensities of the present county court nor the fact that Geddes is on the Republican I executive committee |
