Show A1 QUARTER OF A CENTURY Twentyfive years ago this morning The Salt Lake Herald was launched upon the sea of Journalism It was a rather diminutive fourpage affair but a look at its columns and a glance backward at the events stirring stir-ring at that time tell that though modest in size and circumscribed as to the amount of news and editorial matter published it was well up with the times Indeed there is many a paper published todayafter the lapse of a quarter of a centuryyears which have seen brought out some of the most stupendous achievements of modern ageswhich do not excel even if they compare favorably with it It was an ambitious venture tout it succeeded because the welfare of the I people was ever uppermost in the minds of Its owners The history of The Herald since that time has been the history of this city and territory It has gathered diffused dif-fused and preserved during that period per-iod information that has been and is of priceless value and which must greatly Increase in worth as time rolls onA A glance over the subscription books and of the advertising columns of the issue of June 5 1870 shows that the friends of the long ago are the friends of the present small business houses have grown to mammoth institutions the city has emerged from a hamlet into one of the most prosperous and best known upon the entire American continent with its growth and wealth The Herald is satisfied it has been an important factor Connected with the paper during a quarter of a century are the names of men and boys whose memory is recalled re-called with pleasure many have long since passed away and are represented by mounds in the cemetery on the hillsides hill-sides to these The Herald reverently bows others have sought other avenues ave-nues in life and have attained much honor and distinction among their fellow fel-low mento these The Herald offers its most sincere and heartfelt congratulations congrat-ulations to those of the olden time who yet remain with uswe are glad I that you are here And so on this 25th anniversary of our birth we have but little more to say Our record is before the people the only competent judgesthe supreme su-preme tribunalafter all It need scarcely be said that the efforts ef-forts made in the past to give to the people of Salt Lake of the territory of the future stateIndeed of the entire en-tire intermountain countrya reliable firstclass paper such a one as may be safely admitted to the home circle the business office the street wherever the sons and daughters of men assemble will in not a jot or tittle be relaxed on the contrary they will be redoubled Proud of the achievements of The Herald In past years with bright hopes for the future the thanks of the company com-pany are tendered our friends and patrons to all by whose assistance no matter how small It may have been our success has been securedmay you in the language of the stage Live Long and Prosper |
