Show TWO HUNDRED I WERE W UNnEn Details ofthe Elk Accident Were Not at All Exaggerated Ex-aggerated CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT n Only Wonder Is That Hundreds Were Not Killed Injured Who Are Scattered AllOver Over the Island in Cottages Hotels and Hospitals Arc Doing Well So Far as Heard From An Immediate Investigation Ordered Sympathy From the Elks Assembled As-sembled Atlantic City N J July 11No deaths have yet resulted from last nights disaster at the Baltic Avenue Casino although in other respects the details of the occurrence have not been exaggerated A conservative estimate places the number of wounded at close to 200 Of cose these the only one in immediate danger dan-ger of death is Frederick Claproth of Jennings band Camden N J The report that both Claproth and Miss Jennie Rockwell of Philadelphia were dead is untrue Miss Rockwell was only slightly injured The Cause oC I The accident was aused by the collapse col-lapse of the second floor of the building build-ing immediately over a refreshment pavilion Just previous to the crash Jennings band had begun to play for the Elks and the majority of the people peo-ple were thus attracted to the upper floor But for this there would have been great loss o life A party of New York delegates lingered below but they heard the alarming crackle of timbers and escaped to the board walk outside not a second too soon The great weight of the crowd was the primary pri-mary cause of the accident but there is talk of fixing the responsibility it having been generally known that the structure was old and dilapidated The Casino building fronts the ocean from the board walk at the head of Baltic avenue I is a frame two story structure built about three years ago by the Casino Amusement company com-pany I has been unoccupied for the last two seasons A FunnelShaped Gap 1 When the pillars supporting the upper floor gave way the floor collapsed col-lapsed into a funnelshaped gap forming form-ing a V open at the apex to the lower floor which fortunately stood the shock Those sitting In the middle sitJng of the room were at the bottom of the I heap of humanity which filled the space Cries of women and shouts of the men added to the confusion As te soon as possible willing hands assisted in the work of rescue and the injured were conveyed to hospitals residences and hotels Every house wasthrown open for the reception of the injured and every I available conveyance was pressed into service to carry them to the hospitals j I Meanwhile the physicians were on the scene and were doing everything in their power to aid the unfortunate who had been caught in the crash The excitement amid the assembled crowds was even greater than that in the immediate neighborhood of the wrecked building The people injured were those who were so unfortunate a to fall underneath the mass Among those injured these were taken to the United States hotel The Veterans C I Foote of Minneapolis collarbone collar-bone and arm broken C R Lombard Boston feet mashed and arm fractured J R Duke Joilet III badly cut on the head andabout the face Injured at Schaufelers hotel are James Long Philadelphia injured about face and nose broken Ulie Lee Camden internally hurt Charles Folwell Camdenj leg broken George J Pechin Camden leg mashed At the Hotel Majestic lies James Armstrong exalted ruler oC the new l age with internal injuries His 10 yearold daughter also sustained some injuries about the limbs Mrs Japa and her niece Miss C Friedenthal of New York are also at the Majectic suffering from internal injuries Those at the Albemarle hotel are Mrs C Myers Philadelphia leg fractured Mrs R A Livesley East Liverpool Ohio leg mashed and M E Wells Liverpool Ohio spine injured Others injured Miss Greening Detroit collar bone broken and legs sprained Mrs Dobbs Illinois broken nose W B Rice Detroit sprained leg Edward Youngman Fremont Ohio mouth cut William Baxter Lima Ohio leg and arm injured Bryan W Orr editor Social Session Chicago injured about head I Was a Miracle The scene of the casualty is being visited by thousands today who declare de-clare it remarkable that at least one half of those in the structure at the tose time were not killed outright The injured who are scattered all over the island in cottages hotels and hospitals are doing well as far as heard fiom I is understood that the authorities will institute an immediate investigation investiga-tion with a view not only to ascertain the cause of the mishap but also to provide against the possibility of a recurrence re-currence of such a catastrophe |
