people Arrangements are being made for a trip to Park City on the third day Portland From Portand To the Editor of The Herald PORTLAND Ore Aug 24Permit one who dwells out here in the vicinity vicin-ity of where rolls the Oregon to express the hope that the coming session ses-sion of the Utah Press assocation will prove of lasting benefit to the press of the west The newspaper has become a necessity in every household and the followers of the profession should all be honorable men as at every fireside the companion the newspaper becomes of the child the old the rich and the poor and i is Important that the newspaper man be divorced from corruption cor-ruption and indecency and that he be wedded to honor sobriety truth and good citizenship Let the members of the Western Press association soon to convene remember that the newspaper profession is an honorable walk in life and everyone interested in it should work and deserve it The annual gatherings are productive produc-tive of good to the press the state and the nation I is the duty of the members mem-bers of every profession to become acquainted ac-quainted with those of any particular And in this enlightened calling enlghened age it is the duty of a public educator to become acquainted with every nook brook river rivulet and corner in the territory in which he resides Excursions Excur-sions are therefore not junketing trips but lessons in history geography and good horse sense I I would afford me pleasure to be present in the most beautiful city on I this continent August 27 and 28 as one of the representatives from Oregon Ore-gon at the Western Press association gathering but having made the trip once behind a yoke of faithful oxen twice on horseback and four times toy rail I find that there is not now time enough for me to reach your city either by ox team route or mounted on the hurricane deck of that most noble animal the Oregon cayuse and therefore there-fore must content myself with reading the reports of the gathering in the columns col-umns of the press In closing let me congratulate the press of Utah upon having selected a worker in the person of A B Tomson as secretary At this distance I can see and appreciate good work he has done and I trust that your citi zens appreciate his labors Having succeeded so well for the first meeting meet-ing he certainly would do ten times as well for a second gathering Hoping that behind every newspaper newspa-per represented in the coming gather ing there will be a purity of purpose a solidity of character and above all a love of justice hope for mankind and a strict regard for the truth I am ALBERT TO2IER Secretary Oregon Press Association |
