Show NEW JERSEY FELT IT The Tremor 4 Extended Throughout the Northern Part JERSEY CITY N J Sept 1New Jersey felt the force of the earthquake The tremor extended throughout the northern part while the southern sections sec-tions appears to have escaped the experience ex-perience entirely From all of the cities and villages In the northern section the story received is the same The shock was preceded and accompanied by the low rumbling sound that marks the true earthquake This trembling motion lasted for several seconds In some places the estimate of time is as low as 3 seconds while others place the duration dura-tion of the dusturbance at from 15 to 20 seconds The general course of the shock was from east to west There is much I difference in the reports as to the true direction of the dusturbances The early i hour Is perhaps responsible for this difference dif-ference of opinion as the majority of those who felt and heard the shock were awakened from their sleep by the sound and the vibrations and the quake ceased before they had recovered consciousness and were sufficiently awake to realize the cause of the trouble The shock does not appear to have been sufficiently strong to cause much damage In all places the effects appear to have been about the same Houses were shaken dishes were broken but nothing worse than this has been reported The mountain mount-ain districts appear to have felt the vibrations vi-brations the most keenly That section of Patterson which Is situated on higher I ground was generally shaken while the I people living in other sections of town report having felt nothing of the effects of the quake The shock came between 603 and 603 a m The towns along the ocean shore report little disturbance inconsequence in-consequence of the earthquake |
